Now, I have long held the opinion that American music, I mean the US here, not Latin music, just isnt as good as UK, Europe, Oz and so on. Take grunge. Its 30 years behind punk. Techno. THe US just doesnt get it, yet its been common place here for 20 years. Rock? Well, the US does do it. Although its too shiny and plasticy. Nothing as good as Black Sabbath or LedZep. Even Hendrix. He was 'discovered' playing in London, and was backed by British musicians, giving his music the British heavy rock sound that the Kinks, Stones and The Who typified. France does OK, Indo Chine, Les Rita Moustika, even Germany has Ramsteinm, although for the most part their music is crap. So, convince me. Is there any US American music that you think can convince me that it is just as god as its European counterpart?

I'd have to mostly agree, though there HAVE been exceptions. Janis Joplin, Grateful Dead... I know Aerosmith is laughed at a lot, but I like their stuff. But yeah... For the most part, most of the best music comes from elsewhere... Hell, I'm named after the leader of a British rock band (Jethro Tull), so I know where you're coming from :)

Blues, for a start. Nothing touches authentic American blues. People like Joe Bonamassa and Jeff Beck come close, but don't try to tell me that Eric Clapton ever did more than try to copy Freddy King. I did see John Mayall recently, but I saw Buddy Guy a week before. John was good, Buddy was unbelievable. I don't even know of any purely acoustic blues artists that exist outside of the US ones. Who anywhere in the world could complete with John Lee Hooker ? There ARE no non American thrash metal bands worth considering, it's really all down to the big four. That also goes for heavy metal bands like Twisted Sister, Motley Crue, etc. They created a genre that America owns. Of course, classic metal comes down to bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and then going back to bands like Saxon, no question of that.

Oh, and apart from adding Aerosmith to the mix, I am listening to Stevie Wonder right now. People like him, Marvin Gaye, even Edwin Starr and Wilson Pickett. What non US artists compete successfully in THAT genre ?

Oh come on. Fleetwood Mac wipe the floor with any American artist when it comes to the blues. As for CLapton, Yardbirds, Stones etc. However, you have a point. The ONLY music of any quality coming out of the USW has been black muic. Blues, Stax (actually I quite like Stax) RnB etc. Actualy I was in Buddy Guys bar a few years back. Music was OK, but the Blues is so done to death. As for thrash metal? I am sure when it comes to doing somehting in a tasteless way the Americans are the best. Not that I would want to listen to it though.
