Obama is trying to fight BP in order to stop them issuing a share dividend. That will will please the 40% of the shareholders who are American. As BP is one of the biggest Pension Fund Companies in the world, he will sure alienate a lot of retired folk in the US. Still, I am sure he knows what he is doing.

Why is it Obama's responsibility to "stamp on the neck of" every oil company worldwide?
My point: why does he feel the need to stamp on any oil company? It's not as if BP aren't trying their best to stem the flow. It's not like they tried to pass the buck off to TransOceanic and Haliburton. And why does the administration keep referring to BP as British Petroleum (political point scoring) when it has been BP since (I think) 1989? BP have already agreed to pay for whatever needs to be done: he's making political capital, no more, no less. I think the funniest was a (I think) a congressman who said that BP will have to pay the wages of all of the oil company workers for 6 months because Obama stopped new wells from being opened up. WTF??? It's like BP did it deliberately. Yes, they cocked it up but instead of hand-wringing, accusations and threats why not help? All I see Obama doing is kicking sand around a beach. You're supposed to do a post-mortem after the event, not during.

Because it's affecting the US... And he's the president of the US... So he needs to show the voters that he's on top of this. Since the government isn't capable of fixing this (If anyone can do it, it's the oil companies who already know a LOT about it), all he can do is keep the pressure on BP to fix it as quickly as possible.

Because they've impacted the entire country by ruining a source of food, the economic well being of a couple hundred thousand people, and destroyed the environment in an area that is already having enough issues because of human development.

You must have missed the testimony of their CEOs pointing their figures at each other for the disaster. The government doesn't have the capacity to go down there and turn off the facet and people would bitch and moan if we were able to because that would cost tax money and we can't afford that can we. This entire situation is because a company screwed up and had no way to fix it within a reasonable time frame. I'm not bashing the US (no one is more pro US than me), I'm having a go at Obama for making political capital whilst doing nothing to help and bashing your closest ally at the same time. I realise that Nigeria is not his problem but I bet it gets little or no press and he won't say a thing. He has handled it badly: getting there late and saying he is going to kick ass is not very Presidential - fine, go after BP once it is cleared up but either help them or get out of the way. In any case, and as DD points out, BP are one of the world's largest contributors to pension funds, here and in the states - as soon as people realise that over there...

As an American I don't blame Britain. Why would I? Just because the name of the company has British in the name doesn't mean the British people are to blame or responsible. Any reasonable person can make the distinction.

There was a report in the Telegraph the other day that fisherman in Louisiana are now earning 3 or 4 times as normal helping to clean up. (Doesn't matter who is to blame there is no real upside to any of this).

Nope: but I did notice how the American companies appear to have ducked and run.

Then the govt should either shut up or do something to help. Even if it did cost tax payers money you can bet they'd find a way to get it back from BP (quite rightly).

Of course they can. It still begs the question: why make it an issue in the first place? There was no reason for Obama to do that other than for political reasons and whilst you and I may be reasonable the vast majority of people are not (everywhere).

I agree with your view of Obama and the way he has handled this. I'm also confident hoping that Congressional power will change hands in Novemeber and neuter Obama's FINAL two years. :)

Fact: Every poll in the US shows people being pissed at him cause it is still not fixed. They are ingoring the fact that it isn't even his problem, he can't do jack legally, and that the clean water act was passed by republicans under a republican president and failed here. He is taking a hit on this a lot, the only political capital he can make is to put the heat where it belongs. Bashing your closest ally? Last I knew BP wasn't an ally. They can change their name all they want, the head of BP is a wanker and his commercial firmly tied him to Britain. (We got to watch a propaganda commercial during a newscast about the oil spill, that commercial probably earned CBS a ton of money) If it had been Exxon that had done this spill, we would have seen the same response. It doesn't matter who is doing the damage, we get pissy. As for the Nigeria thing: When the Valdez dumped on Alaska, we had news about it. When this hit the Gulf coast, we had news about it. In between the two, how many major spills have happened? I couldn't tell you. Because we don't care and don't report it at home. Americans are pretty consistent. We don't give a flying eff unless it affects us directly. As a country anyway. Individuals try to help.
If I have accidentally said something witty, smart, or correct, it is purely by mistake and I apologize for it.

They changed their name 21 years ago. Obama is over double that? I know that I didn't start seeing BP signs in Chicago until well into the 90s. The gas stations there only change signs if the old one falls apart, they have a remodel, or they change companies. It could be an old habit or trying to distance this from a US company. Either way, he's taking heat for this and he's trying to get rid of it.
