Updating parent from iFrame

Hey guys, I need to develop something but I'm not even sure if it's possible. Basically, I have an iFrame and a parent page on different domains. On the parent page I have a booking engine progress bar with the steps and I need to highlight the step on which the user is. I have tried calling javascripts from the iFrame but I get permission denied. I also tried sending an anchor in the url to the parent and have the parent page check the anchor every X seconds. But that didn't work either. Is there any way I could do this? I realize it might not be possible but thought I'd ask here as a last resort. Cheers.
