Somewhat contradictory to my previous post, altruism does not exist. The only reason to do something is self-interest. When someone appears to do something altruistic, that can mean that we don't understand their reason, or maybe we're missing some information that they have, or maybe they made a mistake because they were missing some information - or maybe they have a twisted an illogical way of thinking. But their motives were always selfish. Usually that's from the point of view of The Self, sometimes the genes interfere - but genes are always selfish as well, often indirectly. In the end, selfishness doesn't help either. You Will Die.

Another model says that it's just your super-ego constraining your id.

Well, this is somewhat tragic. It's not entirely untrue, I guess, but it's still at tragic worldview. I sponsor two children with World Vision. My religion has nothing to do with that decision, I just feel that so long as I live a comfortable life and other people, through no fault of their own, face starvation, that it is appropriate that I help. In that sense, my motivation is arguably tied to the sort of person I'd like to be, and how I'd like to feel about myself. The question is, do the people who benefit from my donations, benefit less, or benefit in some less than adventageous way, through the root cause of my donation ? It really doesn't matter - I've still helped a total stranger, and the only benefit to me is an intangible one. There's no question that anyone who does good, is going to feel good about it.

So you are actually handing out welfare eh? Didnt think you approved of that. Especially when they start getting houses...
