What css actually thinks about this here are the comments from the infowars.com web site about this article 10 Responses to “Feds Plan NSA “Cyber Shield” for Utilities, Companies” 1. Born Conservative Says: July 7th, 2010 at 9:00 pm “Defense contractor Raytheon Corp. recently won a classified contract….” More like … had it handed to ‘em on a silver platter. Eh, Alex? Folks, Raytheon has always be THE(E) Military-Industrial Complex Top Dog. I suspect that, very quckly now, things are gonna heat up to the point where real censorship on the Web will be implemented, whether at work, or elsewhere… and in stages they will begin to disarm specific areas and after that… it’s a free for all. Heck, they’re already disarming NY City… and the Media looks the other way… And, we call Obama the teleprompter reader…. like we haven’t let The Press get away with that since before Walter Cronkite lied about the Tet Offensive…. and the Gulf of Tonkin, not to mention… the USS LIberty. Seriously….. 2. Bluthund Says: July 7th, 2010 at 9:08 pm The electricity grid and nuclear power stations are NOT ON THE WEB for exactly that security reason. Time to call bulls--- on these f---ers. 3. EmmanuelGoldstein1984.com Says: July 7th, 2010 at 9:28 pm Big Brother is up and running! Just posted a story on this here: EmmanuelGoldstein1984.com Welcome to Hell, fellas. 4. Spellbinder00 Says: July 7th, 2010 at 9:42 pm True, the power grid and nuclear facilities Are Not On The Internet Worldwide. They have their own Secure Net built to isolate them from the outside networks. Totally silly and is to tax us or to create a flase flag incident to clamp down on us, the citizens. Anyone that uses computer networks knows you can’t hack into something that does have access to the web. Only if the federal government puts a link in to cause a breech to occur. EmmanuelGoldstein1984.com Reply: July 7th, 2010 at 10:38 pm That is a good point. Most important networks work on WAN or Wide Area Network which is like a private internet with hardwired connections that only go to their locations. These networks are not even connected to the regular internet so it would be impossible for someone on the outside to hack it. 5. JANET JUBILEE Says: July 7th, 2010 at 10:00 pm It’s time to gather up phone numbers, meeting places and print news outlets, like in the good old da
Wow these guys are complete idiots. I usually read a few comments on yahoo news articles just to see what inane prattle they come up with. There are some real winners out there. Illuminati? that's funny. They must think they live in a National Treasure movie or something. Does these guys think that people who work for power companies don't remote in from time to time to fix things or did they sleep on a reactor?

These are large, typically older, computer control systems that were often designed without Internet connectivity or security in mind. Sensors would be deployed in these control systems to identify unusual activity suggesting impending cyber attacks. There, I've reduced the article to only 3 sentences. Do you understand it now? Do you understand that it is to protect the infrastructure of the USA from cyber attacks? Do you understand that it will monitor specific computer control systems? Do you understand the monitoring will be data specific, relating to the control of those systems? Do you understand that the 'sensors' are thus not placed 'throughout the web' but within the system being monitored. Do you understand that Drudge, et al, - like you - have no knowledge of computer control systems and so talk bollocks? Do you understand that you are merely a sheeple bleating misinformation, because it confirms your beliefs?

Oh, I wouldn't worry about it. It's Raytheon. They'll spend the 100 mill and produce a piece of shit that won't work, coupled to a stacked test program designed to make it appear to be a success. Congressmen will be too ignorant to understand the technical details, but will be terrified of being cast as soft on... oh, something or other... and so they'll vote to increase the program's budget by a couple of orders of magnitude, with the proviso that Raytheon will correct the problems with the test program, since, in spite of Raytheon's best efforst, the product won't even be able to pass tests designed to be fail-proof. (No need to fix the product; the problem is with the tests.) Not that we've seen this before.

Author of the Guardians Saga (Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels)How about the NSA and Feds leave the internet alone and let the nuclear plants disconnect from the web. It is extremely stupid to connect a nuclear reactor to the INTERNET! This is clearly designed to crack down on the web. They will stage a cyber attack where there will be a big power outage or a scare of some type, and that will be used to push more crackdowns on the internet. Just like 9/11 was used to shit on the bill of rights and establish a surveillance police-state, just as the BP oil spill that the Feds will not permit to be cleaned up is being used to push Cap & Tax (it has to be a big enough disaster to make the stupid sheeple cry and beg for more government to fix it), and their next stage is cracking down on the web. They already got a bill that allows the president to issue a shutdown order to all ISP with threat of fines and other legal actions if they refuse.

You should really read this carefully http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_cognition[^] And think very hard on the question "Why has this been suggested to me?" Actually, it applies to everyone, but sometimes it just goes too far. The basic concept would be something like: I think x should be banned, but don't know enough about it --> I go to websites researching "why x should be banned", and I'm outraged (or impressed or whatever) by how many good reasons there are to ban x (and there will, always, be good reasons, at least from someone'e perspective) --> My belief in banning x becomes stronger --> I join a few ban x groups, and meet people who provide me with yet more reasons why x should be banned. This sort of thing spirals out of control in a kind of self-validating infinite loop. I also suggest you read the book "Foulcaults Pendulum" by Umberto Eco.

The Internet is mentioned only twice in the article: Perfect Citizen will look at large, typically older computer control systems that were often designed without Internet connectivity or security in mind. Many of those systems—which run everything from subway systems to air-traffic control networks—have since been linked to the Internet, making them more efficient but also exposing them to cyber attack. Nowhere is monitoring of the Internet mentioned. The 'sensors' are not placed 'throughout the web' but within the system being monitored. The decision to connect control systems to the Internet was to allow instant access to systems by specialist employees and contractors when off site. It was a business decision. Why not contact the power companies, and explain to them where they went wrong? BTW: Don't let them know that your PhD means 'Prepares hot Dogs'.
