You should really read this carefully http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_cognition[^] And think very hard on the question "Why has this been suggested to me?" Actually, it applies to everyone, but sometimes it just goes too far. The basic concept would be something like: I think x should be banned, but don't know enough about it --> I go to websites researching "why x should be banned", and I'm outraged (or impressed or whatever) by how many good reasons there are to ban x (and there will, always, be good reasons, at least from someone'e perspective) --> My belief in banning x becomes stronger --> I join a few ban x groups, and meet people who provide me with yet more reasons why x should be banned. This sort of thing spirals out of control in a kind of self-validating infinite loop. I also suggest you read the book "Foulcaults Pendulum" by Umberto Eco.

How about the NSA and Feds leave the internet alone and let the nuclear plants disconnect from the web. It is extremely stupid to connect a nuclear reactor to the INTERNET! This is clearly designed to crack down on the web. They will stage a cyber attack where there will be a big power outage or a scare of some type, and that will be used to push more crackdowns on the internet. Just like 9/11 was used to shit on the bill of rights and establish a surveillance police-state, just as the BP oil spill that the Feds will not permit to be cleaned up is being used to push Cap & Tax (it has to be a big enough disaster to make the stupid sheeple cry and beg for more government to fix it), and their next stage is cracking down on the web. They already got a bill that allows the president to issue a shutdown order to all ISP with threat of fines and other legal actions if they refuse.

The Internet is mentioned only twice in the article: Perfect Citizen will look at large, typically older computer control systems that were often designed without Internet connectivity or security in mind. Many of those systems—which run everything from subway systems to air-traffic control networks—have since been linked to the Internet, making them more efficient but also exposing them to cyber attack. Nowhere is monitoring of the Internet mentioned. The 'sensors' are not placed 'throughout the web' but within the system being monitored. The decision to connect control systems to the Internet was to allow instant access to systems by specialist employees and contractors when off site. It was a business decision. Why not contact the power companies, and explain to them where they went wrong? BTW: Don't let them know that your PhD means 'Prepares hot Dogs'.

Let them disconnect? Managers chose to connect Government did naught. Or should they be forced? Should the white house force them to? So much for freedom.

If they aren't porn sensors, they won't matter. The internet is for porn.

If I have accidentally said something witty, smart, or correct, it is purely by mistake and I apologize for it.

It will be monitoring computer control systems that would have security implications if attacked - electric, nuclear, subway systems, and air traffic control. These are large, typically older, computer control systems that were often designed without Internet connectivity or security in mind. Sensors would be deployed in these control systems to identify unusual activity suggesting impending cyber attacks. There, I've reduced the article to only 3 sentences. Do you understand it now? Do you understand that it is to protect the infrastructure of the USA from cyber attacks? Do you understand that it will monitor specific computer control systems? Do you understand the monitoring will be data specific, relating to the control of those systems? Do you understand that the 'sensors' are thus not placed 'throughout the web' but within the system being monitored. Do you understand that Drudge, et al, - like you - have no knowledge of computer control systems and so talk bollocks? Do you understand that you are merely a sheeple bleating misinformation, because it confirms your beliefs?
