I can play this game: A coward is much more exposed to quarrels than a man of spirit. Thomas Jefferson Don't talk about what you have done or what you are going to do. Thomas Jefferson Experience demands that man is the only animal which devours his own kind, for I can apply no milder term to the general prey of the rich on the poor. Thomas Jefferson Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom. Thomas Jefferson Whoo quote mining! Edit: This one is too good to pass up. If there is one principle more deeply rooted in the mind of every American, it is that we should have nothing to do with conquest. Thomas Jefferson He's just totally dead on there right? Americans have never done any such thing.

Oh, this game is fun! :)

    Thomas Jefferson wrote:

Actually, I'd say that's dead wrong... If you're a coward, you're probably going to be LESS exposed to quarrels[^], due to being less inclined toward military service... Then again, this quote is a bit outdated, since we don't use crossbows anymore, except for hunting.

    Thomas Jefferson wrote:

Don't talk about what you have done or what you are going to do.

So we're all just supposed to talk about other people? How are we supposed to answer the all-too-common, "How was your day?"

    Thomas Jefferson wrote:

Wrong again, TJ! There are actually a number of species that not only eat their own kind, but actually eat their own offspring[^].

    Thomas Jefferson wrote:

I... can't really think of a joke for this one... It's so vague and generic that there's just nothing to say.

    Thomas Jefferson wrote:

So true! We don't CONQUER... We just run in, shoot stuff for a few years, tell the people how to run their lives, and then go home and let them deteriorate right back to where they were before. So, good ol' TJ gets 2 out of 5... 40% isn't that bad, considering how long it's been since he was relevant.

And now a Jefferson quote to tell us what he would think of people quoting him. The earth belongs to the living, not to the dead. Thomas Jefferson This is fun.

So if humanity goes extinct, does Earth go back on the market, or do the dolphins take custody? :)

Aww, I was gonna save that for CSS's response to those quotes, I had it queued up and everything. But, a few good laughers: Where the press is free and every man able to read, all is safe. Thomas Jefferson The spirit of this country is totally adverse to a large military force. Thomas Jefferson In every country and every age, the priest had been hostile to Liberty. Thomas Jefferson The guy disliked centralized power and priests, who quotes him most often? People who'd attend mega churches. And a few that are actually kinda good to keep in mind: It does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. Thomas Jefferson Nothing gives one person so much advantage over another as to remain always cool and unruffled under all circumstances. Thomas Jefferson

When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe. Thomas Jefferson The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. Thomas Jefferson It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world. Thomas Jefferson I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them. Thomas Jefferson My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government. Thomas Jefferson No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. Thomas Jefferson The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government. Thomas Jefferson The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. Thomas Jefferson To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical. Thomas Jefferson In light of the present financial crisis, it's interesting to read what Thomas Jefferson said in 1802: 'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks, and corporations that will grow up around the banks, will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

Should we all go out and buy some slaves as well?

In the colonies, yes. At the time of American Independence it was not legal to own slaves in England. [edit] Or Scotland.

I'm not the one suggesting how relevant Jefferson is today. Even as recently as 20-30 years ago, the retoric of the political classes would seem out of place today. Going to schools learns you stuff like that.

The ideas of liberty and a constitutional republic, and the rest of Thomas Jefferson's ideas are relevant throughout millennia.
