I tried WIndows Update again tonite. For the first time, it didn't destroy my computer, though it did wipe out my Internet connection. That was easy enough to rebuild, as I always keep copies of previous drivers on my local drive. After carefuly searching through the critical updates (none very critical) and removing the SP3 option and anything else that looked like it might install the damned Automatic Update bullshit from my download list, I let 'er rip. After the download and install was complete I got a summary report, and in the midst of a long list of ostensibly useful updates there appears the line from hell - "Windows Automatic Updating, June 2002" You miserable bastards! I don't want it, I hate it, and I can think of few things lower than to sneak this crap onto a user's machine without making large amounts of noise before you do! Phuque Ewe, Microsoft!!! Do you conciously cast curses on things so that they break? What on earth could you be doing so differently from me? Are you running arcane hardware in extreme environmental conditions? Are you sticking metal probes into the power socket while doing the update? Windows Update, apart from being slow (but that is my connection), works every time and works very well. Never nuked my PC or so much as moved a shortcut icon. But hey, why miss an opportunity to let it all out huh? Fuq ewe Machosoft! (hey that feels better)

Oddly enough Roger, I let Windows Update do whatever the hell it wants on my home PC's and have never, EVER had even a hiccup. Go figure.

Lots of people have very good experiences with the Update feature, Mike. And at least as many have the same experience I do. That's the part I can't figure - if it was entirely bad, I'd expect everyone to have problems. This update was actually the smoothest I've ever run. It didn't destroy the PC, it only wiped out my Internet connection (there was one driver update, and that was for the wireless card) this time. The first sign of trouble was a message that it couldn't save a backup of the original driver because it was corrupted, even though it's been working perfectly for a long time. The pisser was the sneaky installation of the Automatic Update crap I don't want, despite my deliberately skipping the SP3 update that contains it. Now that they've managed to sneak that miserable virus onto my machine without notice, maybe I might as well add SP3. Of course, there's still the issue of the EULA change that comes with it, giving M$ the right to modify my machine without notice or permission any time they feel like it. Sorry for being such a jerk initially, I was just taking my frustrations with a co-worker out on you. His computer is constantly crashing. Virtually every week there is some catastrophe and I have to throw him out the office so that I can fix the damned thing without him saying "But I already tried that." The internet is always too slow or he does not have enough space for his MP3s or blah farking blah. My PC obviously has problems now and then but they are normally relatively minor and if not, are fixed pretty quickly. The only annoying annoying thing I have is an el-cheapo CD-ROM which skips sometimes, but I accept that because it is el-cheapo. I just wonder sometimes what other people get up to with their PCs that results in so much trouble. Some people, like you, just get a bumb machine or situation and no amount of steady thinking helps. But there are definitley people who you can give any machine and they will have have problems. I swear it is simply negative thought. They think things are going to go wrong, and they do. It just frustrates me :) As for your problem... It is weird because when I do the Windows Update I simply run the scanner, accept the default choices and click install. It then updates my machine, reboots and things are patched and fine. I have bog standard hardware (802.11b is the wireless standard isn't it? Which is quite new, maybe Windows Update does not like it?) so drivers are no problem. Maybe a good kick will sort things out :)

Yeah, with Microsoft I've always gone with the idea to let them do whatever they want, ignore the fine print in their licensing and keep a running copy of Linux on a seperate partition. ;)

When I build a PC, I like lots of cooling and a sturdy box - this one's a full tower, with an oversized power supply and room for 7 fans. Paul Watson wrote: I just wonder sometimes what other people get up to with their PCs that results in so much trouble. Some people, like you, just get a bumb machine or situation and no amount of steady thinking helps Most of my clients are as you describe - they get their machines totally screwed up by downloading every piece of crap they see in the Internet. My most recent bought a used machine, refuses to read a book, and installs anything and everything that she finds. After two hours of removing and disabling known troublemakers, then reconfiguring her browser and mail client so all the toolbars were available (I have yet to figure out how she managed to kill all of them), I finally had her system working. Four hours later she called and had somehow managed to bollux up the whole thing again. Some people shouldn't have PCs! Having a bum machine is really quite rare. Unpredictable software interactions are more often the cause of problems. Like prescription drugs, some pieces just won't play nicely in the same sandbox. Unlike drugs, there are no warnings on the packages. You only find them when something breaks and you have to contact tech support. Then they grudgingly admit that there's an "issue" with that particular combination. I had this come up last night - I recommended that a client try ZoneAlarm, as she is on a fixed income and can't afford a more effective firewall. Now she's having problems with it, and tech support admits that it won't work with her Grisoft AV software unless she buys the Pro version. Sheesh!!! What on earth is going on??? Am I the only person on the planet that doesn't have these sort of problems. Rarely, if ever, do I have this sort of issue. I find that as long as you don't try to do about 10 other things at teh same time as windows update then nothing bad ever happens. If I'm messing around with other apps then occasionally it'll mess up. But rarely!!! Regards, Brian Dela :-)

David Wulff wrote: have you ever considered letting Microsoft decided the order and importance of the updates to their software? One would expect that to be a reasonable process. Unfortunately the Update function doesn't work that way. Last night's batch, for instance, contained in the preselected list of updates at least two that were exclusive downloads. Each must be downloaded separately and installed (with a reboot) in order to minimize the damage to the system. A more rational process would display the entire list, but select only one of the exclusive updates so that a person merely following directions and clicking "here" would not get into trouble. On restarting the system, the installer should then return to the Update site and display the next such download, continuing until there are only non-exclusive updates remaining. These could then safely be preselected safely. "When in danger, fear, or doubt, run in circles, scream and shout!" - Lorelei and Lapis Lazuli Long
