No, it is better and there is a reason. Old School valve technology is analogue, not digital, so it alters continuously not in discrete steps.

I like technology. I like gadgets, I like machines, always have done. And I love the way it gets better and better. But, I had a thought the other day while ripping the solo for Communicaiton Breakdown: Here I am playing 1960s technology in preference to 2010 technology. The amp has valves in it! The guitar is a copy of a 60s model, built to a very similar spec, heck, even the song comes form the 60's :) And in fact this kind of setup, Les Paul/Strat + Marshal/Fender/Peavey/MessaBoogie/HiWatt valve amp is the prefered setup of almost all guitarists. Modeling amps have some interest, and active electronics too, but are not in anyway as good as the old technology. Odd. Can we really not make it better? Its kind of like the horseshoe crab, it must be so well adapted that it hasnt evolved in millions of years. Will we still be playing this same kind of gear in millions of years time?

But what's better? Is it more correct to say that that kind of amplifier suits the musical taste of the time or you personally and is therefore seen as better? Are other kinds of amps better for different styles of music? I'd pick you as a 60's - 80's generic rock man, its no doubt you like the kind of amp that suits that music.

Yep, my old college roommate plays electric bass and builds his own amplifiers... Always used to talk about how vacuum tubes were so much better for exactly that reason.
