Personally, I think that if we really were running out of oil, the goverment/oil industry would keep it quiet until a better alternative was found, to prevent panic etc. Although I could be wrong ;P

There is so much oil, especially abiotic oil, that the government and big oil companies are afraid their monopoly is over unless they pass strict legislation that keep the prices up.

People keep using the limiting oil argument as as argument over fuel. Most oil is not used as fuel. In fact petrol is a waste product, it would have no use unless it was burnt as a car fuel. Most of the oil we pull from the earth is used to make plastics, medicine and other heavy hydrocarbon dependant products. The first internal combustion engine, built by Mister Benz, was designed to run on peanut oil.

What medicine is made from oil? I wouldn't call BPA [^]a medicine.

Yes it's called Fractional Distillation[^] :) The theory of it is amazingly simple :) Here is a diagram of what temperature the different fules are collected at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/images/5_fractional_distillation.gif[^] (One of the few things I actually understood in Chemistry when I was at school, I prefered Physics and Biology :) )

Some medicines, such as penicillin, are made by organisms, but most are manufactured from chemicals, and many of these are made from petroleum products. Acetylsalicylic acid, or ASA, is the active ingredient in many of the well-known, over-the-counter pain relievers. ASA is manufactured from petrochemicals. One of the first uses of oil, dating back thousands of years, was as medicine. Other early uses included illumination and as a boat resin to help keep ships sea-worthy. This Wikipedia link will explain more about petrochemicals and their health care and pharmaceutical use Petrochemicals[^]

I leave for a week and come back to find this kind of nonsense? "Thousands of years"? Sheesh. Everyone knows oil wasn't discovered until 1962, by a man out hunting in the Ozarks.

Not sure of the spelling, but I believe that's the one. It's been so long since I took an American History course, my memory is a bit foggy on the details.
Does anyone else remember the spoof 'The Bel-Air Arabs', on the old SNL? Gilda Radner as Granny... can't remember the rest. One line from the theme song stuck with me, though... 'And then one day he was out shooting at some Jews, and up through the ground came bubbling crude...'
