English spelling sucks. If you want a great language, learn Welsh. It's a lovely phonetic language that admittedly requires nearly a pint of phlegm in your throat to pronounce anything. But still, it's one of the oldest langauges in Europe. "Car", for example, is Welsh. Ha! Whenever you get in your "car", think of me being annoying like this! I just got an email asking me why marine, urine and twine do not rhyme. Good question,no? OK maybe not, but I thought it be a good waste of time to come up with more non-rhyming words that look like they should. like: semen and Yemen. (no offense to any Yemenese);) BW "I'm coming with you! I got you fired, it's the least I can do. Well, the least I could do is absolutely nothing, but I'll go you one better and come along!" - Homer J. Simpson
brianwelsch wrote: I just got an email asking me why marine, urine and twine do not rhyme. *Paul trys to answer seriously* Because rhyming is not just about similar sounding words but is also to do with the rythmn and inflection of the word. Marine lifts up at the end, but urine and twine do not. The "ine" in urine does not have the "wine" sound to it that twine does. In this Story of English book I am reading they show how three different people all speaking different dialects of English all disagree on the rhyming of the same poem. Seems pronounciation is very important.

You are the intrepid one, always willing to leap into the fray! A serious character flaw, I might add, but entertaining. Said by Roger Wright about me.

Another good example is the name of the actor "Sean Bean" (Pronounced shawn been if you're uncertain) -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

ghapt should be an acceptable spelling for fat, right? (gh as in cough, and pt as in pterodactyl) BW "I'm coming with you! I got you fired, it's the least I can do. Well, the least I could do is absolutely nothing, but I'll go you one better and come along!" - Homer J. Simpson

good one! (had to look up who he was) tear and bear, and tear i suppose too. with tear and bear actually sounding similar like 'air', and the other tear sounding different like 'beer'. I think I'll check out that book you've trying to get everyone to buy 'The Story of English'. ;) I also found this one, which seems like an interesting read as well. Mother Tongue[^] I have the Cambridge Encyclopedia of English[^], and need to dust it off, and take a peek again. BW "I'm coming with you! I got you fired, it's the least I can do. Because english is a result of collisions (usually the aftermath of invasions ) of at least half a dozen languages ! So if I can speak english does that make me multilingual ? Elaine (speaking in tounges) Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?
Trollslayer wrote: Because english is a result of collisions (usually the aftermath of invasions ) of at least half a dozen languages ! The thing thats neat now, is that English is going back and effecting some its root languages. Speaking with family in Germany, I know that there are many english words that get peppered into their daily language. An obvious example is 'cool', i think the French may use also. Rhyme with orange, silver, and purple (all colors, no less, eh?!) English is just a silly language that has more exceptions than rules. As far as logical languages go, it is NOT high up on the list. :-D Dough, thorough, through, cough, etc... none of them rhyme. :-D That's why I ramble so much. If you're short and quotable, there's a much greater danger of ending up in a sig. [Christopher Duncan on how to prevent yourself from ending up in a sig]

I've heard that English the one of the most difficult languages to master, but one of the easiest to get your meaning across. Not sure how it can be both. BW "I'm coming with you! I spent a few months in Germany last year (Nuremberg in the south), and there are a few Italian words used too. Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?
