    1. Provide employment for Day Care Workers - good thing. 2) Get more short skirts into offices - good thing. 3) Um...

That is what you tell yourself to make you feel safer, but in reality the government controls just about every part of your life. They aren't stupid, If they were stupid they wouldn't be in power.

You don't need to be intelligent to be a lying, manipulative weasel. In fact from what I've seen it helps if you aren't. Of course thanks to Mr. Dunning and Mr. Kruger we have an explanation as to why they may think they are, but typically they aren't. Take Palin for example. It doesn't take a rocket scientist(or even an English major) to tell you that comparing yourself to Shakespeare because you make up words is a remarkably bad idea, but she did.

It's about the votes. And remember, it doesn't need to make sense to you, but it probably makes sense to the ones that are affected.

You will be expecting that to go up then? What with all those people no longer paying council tax. They wont be eligible for it on the dole. All the people being laid off from private enterprise no longer paying council tax as they've been laid off because not as many people are buying their products/paying for their services. Oh and just because the government have cut the amount of money they pay to local councils and the money has to come from somewhere.

They are in the UK - for example part-timers are not eligible for overtime pay until they have worked the same number of hours as a full time employee would have. So you can employ two PT to cover the same hours (say 15 + 15) as a FT worker (say 30), but if they do extra hours, each PT can get basic wage until they have worked 30 hours - lots cheaper for the employer. There are others differences but they basically all add up to benefits for the company, not the worker.

Yeah, I am from the UK, what you say is true. I wasnt sure if its the same in Holland though, but if so its a possible cause. There are some big difference between the UK and the continent with this kind of thing.

That's not actually true. Overtime pay is entirely down to an individuals contract of employment and from recent experience more and more employers are offering either none, time off in lieu or payments at normal time only. There is no legal entitlement in the UK to overtime pay any more, if in fact there ever was. From DirectGov[^]; There's no legal right to pay for working extra hours, and there are no minimum statutory levels of overtime pay, although your average pay rate must not fall below the National Minimum Wage. Your contract of employment should include details of overtime pay rates and how they are worked out. Overtime rates vary from employer to employer, some will pay extra for working weekends or Bank Holidays, and others won't. In terms of statutory entitlements though part-time workers do have the same rights as full-time. From DirectGov[^]; Part-time workers have the same statutory employment rights as any other employee. You do not have to work a minimum number of hours to qualify for employment rights.

I guess it depends where you look:

                                Re: Employment Act 2008

Overtime Part-time workers do not have an automatic right to overtime payments once they work beyond their normal hours. Only when part-time workers have worked up to the normal hours of comparable full-time workers do they have a legal right to overtime payments. This does not affect the right of part-time workers, where they are entitled, to receive unsocial hours payments, weekend payments or other forms of enhanced pay (see previous section). To comply with the law: Part-time workers should receive the same hourly rate of overtime pay as comparable full-time workers, once they have worked more than the normal full-time hours. Examples of complying with the law: A hotel, in which full-timers work five 8 hour days per week, hits a busy period in the run up to Christmas. It asks all its staff to work extra hours. A part-time worker who normally works 9-12 agrees to work 9-2. She receives her normal hourly rate of pay, with no overtime payment, for the additional hours. The same applies to a second part-time worker who normally works two days a week, and agrees to work four. A third part-time worker normally works three days a week, and agrees to work for five days and one evening. She receives her normal pay rate for the extra two days, but receives an overtime payment for the extra evening.
