So... It's all over the news... Someone has to mention it, right? Lots of people are saying a lot of different things, but here's the story as I understand it... 1) Two "breadbox"-sized mail bombs were found in packages in the UK (East Midlands) and Dubai. Both were addressed to "Jewish organizations in the Chicago area." (That's in Illinois, USA) 2) Those bombs made them suspect a passenger jet from Yemen (That's where the packages were shipped from)... They sent a couple fighter jets to escort it to JFK airport (Here in NYC), and made sure it was clean... It was. That's all. My view: The system worked. Good job. Let's move on. Media/Sheep view: Oh no! We're being attacked again! Mr. President, what are you going to do to protect us!?!? How do we make sure this can NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!?!? DHS view: We got them this time, but this means we should "redouble our efforts" (scare people into giving us more power)... That's the crap I keep hearing on the news... Make sure WHAT doesn't happen again? Nothing happened. The plot was thwarted, and no one died. The security measures worked. Well done. Pat on the back. End of story. This isn't "Oh no! They almost got us!" This is "They tried, but we were ready for them." Ugh, I'm going to start sounding like CSS here... But I'm worried that they're going to use this to spread fear and scare us into giving Homeland Security more power...

Rocks and hard places. If you don't make a big deal of it, people start complaining about the waste of money because nothing ever happens. If you do make a big deal of it, you clue all the bad guys into what (and often how) you're doing. Sigh. They just won't send anything icky from Yemen anymore. Maybe packages from Bangalore* won't be scrutinized as much... *Just picked Bangalore 'cause I think the name is cool.

When they start another agency to solve problems caused by having to many agencies not communicating properly, and then use it as an excuse to wedge into civil rights, it's really hard to qualify as paranoid about what they might try to do with a situation. That said, CSS and some others do still manage, it's just hard to reach that point.

Was round my in-laws earlier and he had BBC News 24 on. They phoned up some sort of expert to talk about it and he said that the over the top and inflammatory news coverage is not helpful, and is unwise. I doubt if they will phone him up again. The sort of experts these 24 hour news stations like are those who are prepared to speculate and make up stuff when there is almost no information to go on. Of course the more sensational and frightening the better. The problem with 24 hour news coverage is that there just isn't enough news to fill the time, so as soon as something potentially big starts they go throw everything they have at it, I am sure with at least one eye on potential awards. I said this after watching some of the coverage of the Cumbrian shootings a few months ago, the biggest problem with 24 hour news is that sometimes it is better to just shut the fuck up and say nothing. The coverage on Sky News of the Chile mine rescue started with a team of experts back in the studio analyzing each man as they came up, and they were just making stuff up based on almost nothing, and it was all over the place. Fortunately they quickly realised all they need do was give the name, little bit of background to each man as they came up then shut up and let people watch. And it was absolutely brilliant to do so. As for the events of today, it do not think it a coincidence that this comes at the end of a week when major airlines were calling for a relaxation in the security measures around flying.

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

Do a basic check for smuggling then get on the damn plane! The savings in security theatre will pay a nice bonus to the volunteer crew who are sick of the crap as well.

Don't be surprised if they stage a serious attack near election time, if the repubs get into power and especially Tea Party candidates, they will no doubt retaliate with staged terror attacks or pull the strings on the economy to teach us a lesson. Soon enough they will be cattling people up into concentration camps, the TSA groping and strip searching is to acclimate us into accepting being treated like cattle.

But the concentration camps are not for the sheeple, they are for those who present a threat to government. As an evident sheeple, you have nothing to fear.

Extra guards watching you at airports? + Extra screenings at airport? = more power? Huh? They do these things already. I could dig but I don't think I need to. Any procedure by this agency deemed un-neccessary could be ended by actions taken by the people's direct representitives (the House) I bet.
