It's a little old (Nov. 2002 issue of WPR), but a good read anyway. Why Bush Wants to Attack Iraq[^] BW "Computers are useless. They only give you answers." - Pablo Picasso

The middle east is a powder keg just waiting for a spark. Do we throw a match on it now and deal with it, or do we wait and let it explode at a more inopportune time? Say like when Saddam and the rest of the Arab countries have nukes.

Maybe not all, but would you trust Iraq, Syria, Iran, or Saudi Arabia to use them wisely? When any of these countries get them, Hezbollah, Al Queda, and any other terrorist group will be one step closer to having them. These extremist groups want to destroy the West. They don't want to live peacefully with us. I suggest we take off the blinders and see them for what they are... murderers.

AFAIK, USA created these monsters (Bin Laden and Saddam) by giving them weapons and training in the early 80's. Kant Sonork-100.28114 Success is only a matter of luck. Ask any failure.

I'm not condoning the decisions made by past Presidents but I do believe they were acting in what they thought were the best interests of the free world at the time. Saddam was anti-Iranian and OBL was anti-Soviet. Hindsight is 20/20 but no one on this world can see what will happen in the future. Your statement is like blaming a dept. store CEO for the stabbing death of someone because the killer bought a knife at his store. How was he supposed to know the killer was going to use the knife for something other than spreading butter on bread?

I don't really trust my own country (US) to "use them wisely" (whatever that might mean...). The best possible answer would be if nobody had them, but once the Genie is out ofthe bottle... The next best alternative is to prevent anyone who does not yet have them from ever getting them.

Once Saddam has nukes, you won't need to worry about "the rest of the Arab countries". The Empire of Iraq will be all there is...

No, it's more like blaming the clerk at the sports store because a strange and obviously unbalanced individual bought a rifle and blew away his neighbours the next day. The US govt knew that the Middle East was unstable, but they thought the USSR was a bigger enemy, so they gave them guns and training. If they'd been smarter to begin with, the situation would not like this now. If they act smarter now .... nevermind.
