    Wow, I've been lax.

Actually three years now, plus 4 days. I'm beginning to wonder if being the last person to post in the back room is worth it :~. Especially as, if I do it right, no-one will ever know.

Might make a Monthly visit like this. The weather here today is actually OK, marred only by the fact I'm in Sunderland. I think I might be cracking up, I've started talking to myself.

Well, monthy seems to by bi-monthly. I've been busy with JavaScript at work I suppose. Weather pretty nice today, still marred by Sunderland. Nice to see I've found someone to talk to, myself and Wilson - who to be fair is just a face painted on a ball. Shhhh. I think they're listening.

Turns out they weren't listening, but them might be. Thinking I might be cracking up in here, it's just so lonely. I remember this place in its heyday - CG duelling with Corporal Myopic or whatever his name was. You could just hear the tinfoil hat crinkling as he typed. No More. Now just damned silence and the voices in my head telling me to consume and obey. And Wilson.

The golden sun doth shine its rays 'pon the ground on which Sunderland lays But woe be thou, o mortal man! Do what thou wilst or what thou must Thine eyes will alway incline To a wifeman's half reveal-ed bust.

Well, I'd forgott_en_ I wrote that. Since then the Great British summer has failed to proceed. Not in a good mood, we had to let the two remaining apprentices go today.

Nearly two months on and we're definitely into Autumn, the trees are turning, we've had fog. Two of the apprentices found work with another company, which is good. The third is still looking, hope he finds something soon.

Well, the human drama of the apprentices has played out. Two of them found other work, the third didn't, pity. New intake of grads going reasonably well. I saw the first Christmas ads yesterday absa-fucking-lutely appalling - nigh on two months of that mawkish shite ahead. The John Lewis one makes me want to puke again, but people are sharing it so it's doing its job.

Good news on the apprentice front - the last one not to have found a job starts a new career in the new year, this makes happy as he was a good egg. All quiet on the Western front - run up to christmas so not much happening right now. The graduates are al off on their hollibobs, except for a couple who decided to brave it in. I wonder when the Captain See Sharp containment unit will be shut down - I think I might be the last person to post here for nearly a year.

Well, the apprentice who found a new job didn't last long. Turns out he was on a further apprenticeship and his new manager didn't like the fact he didn't already know the new job somehow - at least that is what I heard. Grads are doing actual work, which makes me happy - it seems to have perked them up too. Hopefully things will be more organised in the next intake in terms of handover. They've been a good bunch this year.

Ho hum. Nothing really to say. I've kicked off a prototype mobile app. Looking pretty interesting so far as it's the first green-field I've worked on in years. The grads have nearly finished their first team project, seems to be less cobbled together than I expected, which is nice :)

I was going for a whole descent into madness vibe, got bored then re-attempted. The human drama is very real though.

Nearly Christmas. App close to release. Grads no longer grads, now have the lofty title "Junior". Currently waiting for our build to run the checks on a PR I've put up. I'm old enough to remember when programming was about cutting code and not just constantly curating "features". I kinda miss it, but also get why we've got to where we are. [edit] Also read "Steppenwolf" - takes a while to get going, but really takes off about a third of the way through.

Wow, 7 months or so have elapsed. The pangs of feature curation are still there - I seem to spend a good third of my time in meetings planning work, and two thirds of the remaining time concentrating on the "Ops" part of "DevOps". I cut four lines of code yesterday - copy/pasted from one of the territories who'd already solved the problem. Currently reading the XKCD what if book - a pressie from she who must be obeyed. Very nice.

I cut four lines of code yesterday - copy/pasted from one of the territories who'd already solved the problem. Currently reading the XKCD what if book - a pressie from she who must be obeyed. Very nice.

Tempus fugit. Now working on build systems, so have taught myself to BASH properly now, not as grubby as you'd think. Some of the Grads are not losing the "Junior" part of their title, which is good to see. Went to a maker's fare in Newcastle yesterday, bought a cheap "turtle" type robot. The kids are interested, so might start teaching them programming.

With any luck, I am on the last job of my life. I was almost to the point of embracing retirement after getting laid off, but some silly recruiter talked an employer into hiring me. :)
