How not to treat your Intellimouse

For the umpteempth time I blew my self to smithereens with a hand grenade. In Half Life that is. HL has a nasty habit of not letting the hand grenade go when you say so, normally resulting in you becoming an instant interior decorator, but only in shades of red. That I love running around just hurling hand grenades does not help my cause. In this case though I got so pissed off that I lifted my Intellimouse up and smashed it down on the table, spilling a cup of tea in the process. Now the scroll button does not work. It makes a grinding noise and starts double clicking instead (the other buttons work fine.) I had a look but could not find any screws or catches underneath the mouse. So does anyone know how to open a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer USB (the optical one?) Thanks.

Look under the glide pads for the screws, then you'll need to carefully seperate the red base from the top without breaking the side buttons (just push them in and use brute force). From memory the two main buttons "click" into the base, or something like that, so be prepared to apply a fair bit of force to them to get them to seperate.

Oh god. I took my intellimouse apart the other week (it intermitantly stops working, and I thought something may be loose inside, but I now suspect that the cable is just wearing out) It took me a good hour to get it back together again properly -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

My Intellimouse has always been a bit dodgy - the "back" button sometimes gets stuck and the mouse requires a sharp slap to the underside to free it. Also, I'm aware of several complaints about the quality of the lead. Luckily, mine's not gone yet though I'm sure there's sometimes some spurious movement of the pointer. I'm looking at getting one of the new Logitech MX700s - cordless but supposedly as good as a corded mouse and it has its own charger and much better optical detector technology (apparently). Looks good. I bought an expensive optical mouse because I was tired of old mechanical mice wearing out and figured out a mouse without moving parts wouldn't wear out - not taking movement of the cable into account :\ I think I will give a cordless optical mouse a go the next time I buy a mouse, as that does seem to eliminate all the wear problems, though I'm sure there are others I haven't considered -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

Unfortunately, I don't think the MX500, or MX700 will suit you then, as they're all designed for RH use. The MX300 can be used by either RH or LH of course, though its specification isn't as impressive as the 500 or 700 (check the review).
