At least I managed to laugh most of the way through that. I can even think of worse B-movies. At least Plan 9 has the excuse of bein 40-odd years old; what's The Killer Eye's excuse? Seven Years in Tibet was probably the most tedious film I've ever sat through but too well put together to be considered worst film. Maybe Driller Killer? Of course if you went there expecting Fred Astair and Ginger then it is not the fault of the movie that you did not respect it. If it was just another action movie then it would have been borderline good, but they, rather poorly and extremely distastefully, tried to associate it with a real event that should never have been approached by Hollywood. What next - Holocaust the movie? The scene with the woman ("don't you pick that up, don't you do it") was played from entirely the wrong angle, and to be bluntly honest it made me sick to know tens of thousands of American kids will be growing up believing that was what actually happened in Somalia. Hate to break it to you David but stuff like that does happen. I have read many instances of women and children totting guns in war ravaged areas, picking them up and firing at whomever. Women are not all saints you know. Just over the border in Zambia kids as young as nine walk around with Kaleshnikovs terrorising anyone who tries to stop them. Frankly I disagree with your impression of the movie. I came away with the feeling that the yanks really cocked it up. There was very little ra-ra, patriotic, American Might Is Right nonense. For heavens sake, the UN had to come in and save their bacon. Of course it was not 100% accurate, no movie or book or grandpa is every going to be that. And I can assure you with first hand experience that the scenes you see where the mobs of nuts murder and strip the downed helicopter pilots and the two guys who went into save them are a good reflection of reality. I live in a pretty good part of Africa and have seen scenes like that, luckily I was on the "right" side of police and army barriers. It is scary stuff seeing people act like that. Anyway, all in all I thought BHD was technically excellent. It also was not a total lie like most Hollywood movies. Come to Africa (or go to Eastern Europe) and ask some journalists here what real life is like in places like Somalia, the Congo etc. It is worse than what the movies portray I am sure. David Wulff wrote: What next - Holocaust the movie Ummm, ever heard of Schindler's List? Rather brilliant film. I don't think any subject is unaproachable. Burying things and making them taboo is just sad. Soon we will have a movie on 9/11. I wonder why they have not brought out Lockerby yet. David Wulff wrote: SPR SPR ? Paul Watson wrote: Hate to break it to you David but stuff like that does happen. Oh no, you are taking me from the wrong angle now! I didn't meant that at all, moreso the way it was portayed with regards to the whole "storyline" of the film. As an action film it stands up, but not as a historical piece by a long shot. They flossed over the effect they had on the Somalians (the civilians, not the militia) and in my eyes protrayed them as though *they* became the "bad guys" when they took up arms to protect themselves. Just another typical "feel good" Hollywood production. Paul Watson wrote: Ummm, ever heard of Schindler's List? Rather brilliant film. I've seen it, but that is nothing like what I was thinking of. I'm not going to push the issue, I really don't feel like it right now (this Session bastard is really kranking up my stress levels today !) Paul Watson wrote: SPR ? Hey, it was a damn good one if so! There's one really memorable bit in it where some guy comes running into a crowd of people and shouts something like "Quick, run away, there's a bunch of giant killer rabbits heading this way!!!". The really funny bit is that all these people believe him. Yeah, right. Debbie
