Earlier in the Lounge a post was started, and quickly slapped down (I agree with that, btw) about what a post-war Iraq should be renamed. I've been playing with the idea most the afternoon - a duller than normal day - and still like my first thought. In keeping with tradition, following along the lines of Syria, Arabia, Persia, etc, I propose "Petrolia". Any other ideas?:-D Nobody wants to read a diary by someone who has not seen the shadow of Bubba on the prison shower wall in front of them!

How about put back the smaller countries that were there before the west (primarily the UK) created Iraq ? Never wondered about those amazing straight borders there ? Someone drew lines on a map when dividing the middle east up :~ The tigress is here :-D

That reminds me of Petrostrokia, or however you spell it. *Paul puts on a dark humour cap* I think they should call it Hessian. Hessian because that is what they are going to need lots of after the war. Hessian makes for good bags...

Oops ... even it'd be a good idea, there'd be a problem not to be underestimated: the inhabitants of one of our (German) federal states, Hesse, are being called Hessians .... so if Bush should grab your idea and call former Iraq Hessian, you should try to get a new name .. or even a new identity ... or move to a new country ....because Hessians can become very uncomfortable ;):)

How about United Islamic Republic - after Iran invades once the American forces have gone leaving Iraq defenceless against its neighbour with a grudge. Michael The avalanche has started, it's too late for the pebbles to vote.

The whole mideast is a mystery, in fact, as it had no significance when I was in school and was barely mentioned except as a region where great cultures once lived.
