Database Suggestions

I just looked at the database forum here on CodeProject, and its two related forums, and the definition of "database" in those three groups is way beyond the scope of what I'm looking for. Those guys look like the professionals of professionals. I just want to set up a system that I can use to track a set of people. A spreadsheet is *NOT* the answer in this case. I want a window on my screen with the fields physically separated and so on; i.e., simple without requiring me to solve complex matrix algebra just to keep a list of names, E-mail, and some keywords associated with each member. I seriously doubt that I'll ever have a thousand people in this system. So far I have looked on - FreeWareFiles.com - FileHippo.com - Download-Free.com - Download.com I welcome suggestions for such a database program. Can you elaborate on this? By "track" do you mean "find by email and/or keyword", or something else? Do you anticipate increasing the type of data of you may want to manage in the future (e.g. contact phone #, etc.)? An old version of MS Access can be had for less than $20 - see this[^] EBay auction. /ravi

May I suggest (if not recommend) Microsoft SQL Server Compact 4.0[^] ?

Take a look at this[^] :-O . It's a semi-auto generated data services for membership management. Once setup, it allows rapid and customized growth. It could serve your purposes (i.e. it have build-in SQL like, smart, user search interface so that you may not need keywords). It allows an initially small system to grow smoothly and continuously at low costs. As a service, it has relatively clean documented APIs and rich sample codes (see the test packages) for a .NET or front end ASP.Net web developer who has limited knowledge about relational databases to work with. Because of this, it can be used in various applications, including but not limited to Asp.Net membership management. No real databases are needed for small data sets (say, less than 50,000 rows) since it can be initially attached to in-memory databases of ours and it is much faster and cheaper than using a traditional database engine when the data sets are small. When your system grow to a size that in-memory databases are not suitable, we could provide adaptors and data migrators to attach it to a selected database engine aquired by and licensed to you. However, do not use the demo service for production system since it uses .NET serialization methods designed for remoting, not for long time persistence. Microsfot could upgrade it in the future as the .NET framework grows that may render old data files not readable (it happend serveral times in our experiences). I agree with both RedDK and Ravi but will strongly recommend SQL Server (express or compact) but it may be overkill for what you require. Access bleh may actually be more appropriate. However some of the other suggestions on small specialised tools (filemaker etc) may be even more appropriate, you should look at them in light of your requirements and skill level. If you are going to develop an app against a database definitely use SQL Server it insure the app has plenty of growth potential.

So create a custom system - basically write your own simple database. You either used fixed record sizes or create an index to find records. Probably easiest if the index is in another file. If you go this route then make sure you use an API in your code that completely separates the rest of the code from the storage mechanism. That way you can replace it later on if you want.
