Rant alert! I can't believe what happened today! First, some background. Perhaps some of you know that I have my own little firm with a friend, and we do projects and make our products too. Shareware mostly. And an email server. I mean nothing completed yet, because doing projects and dealing with the burocracy takes up all of our time. And we set ourselves up fairly recently. Anyway, in order to sell our wares outside India (which is where most of our customers will be, if any, since not many people in India can buy online yet), we need to have an IEC (Import-Export Code). And to get the IEC, we've had to do a lot of paperwork, run from government office to government office, burocrat's desk to burocrat's desk. Finally, almost everything is complete, and only one thing is required. A certificate from our bank saying that we have an account with them, since so and so date. That's all. A small, teeny weeny form, where the bank manager would just have to fill in the blanks, put his signature on the dotted line at the bottom, and that would be it. But no, he won't do it. Why? Because he claims we've not had enough number of transactions with the bank yet. WTF? What does this have to do with a paper certifying that we have an account with them? Now, we are a small outfit. We've not had too many big projects. Barely able to meet both ends, so far. Sometimes we manage to get very small projects, sometimes not at all. Sometimes people give us cash, or a bearer's cheque, which we encash and use the money to pay the bills. Anyway, all this is moot. What does the number of transactions have to do with whether or not he will sign a paper certifying that we have an account with them? I mean nobody is asking him to say we have been very good clients, or something of that sort. The certificate is required only to prove we have an account, and to maybe monitor our sales and tax etc. After a bit of arguing with him, all of a sudden he said there is no such certificate required for the IEC. I wanted the certificate for something else. I said WTF, and showed him the form. He changed the topic. He kept wasting my time for the whole afternoon, while I tried in vain to explain it to him. I almost wanted to scream. Pull this guy from behind his desk and beat the shit out of him. But then I know that he's the guy who will ultimately sign it, and so I can't get on the wrong side of him. Besides, I don't think I could bear the humility of being thrown out by the security guards. I was told th

I mean I'm considering moving to another city. Any one will do. Some place where I'll have more options. Where I'll be able to change banks, ISPs, etc, if I don't like them. Where I'll be able to find more clients. Where people have a better work culture. The government machinary and the burocracy will of course remain the same, but at least other things will be better. Not necessarily a big city. I prefer living and working in small cities. But when you have to deal on a day to day basis with issues that could/should be done away with you start feeling that you are wasting your time. And most of these keep coming back at you no matter what you do.

Do you pay fees for foreign exchange? How about posting your snail mail address and have volunteer's send you a buck (of what ever currency). Just look at the international traffic you have:) For the number of people who have received funds to help them out of debt because they are stupid, I would think the response should be decent for a more worth while cause:) "I will find a new sig someday."
