A post below reminded me of one of my pet hates. In films/TV, all futuristic equipment is completely covered in LEDs, it doesn't matter if its a communicator or scanner or what, in fact the more high tech it is the more LEDs it has. The futher in the future it is set the more LEDs it has. A good example of this is inside Data's head (in Star Trek). In one episode they open Data's head and its packed full of LEDs - what do they do? What is the point? No one can see them ..... its just stupid! Ali looks around sheepishly ..... Oh, I've just got all upset about Star Trek (I'm not a Trekkie honest).... shame overload .... Goodbye! Ali

Without branding myself a Trekkie all the computers in Star Trek use optics and so LEDs (or the future equivalent of them) don't seem so out of place. What gets my goat is: STUPID FARKING SOUND EFFECTS The only people I know who have sound effects on their PC whenever they click, type or so much as blink are 12 year old girls who also have Barbie as their Windows XP theme. I always turn off all sound effects in Windows. Computers do not go beep bloop beeeep bep beloeleleeop blooooooooop when they are "thinking." Thankfully not much goes beep in Star Trek, but modern movies are rife with the sounds,

Yeah, actually now you come to mention it all the circuits I design (which often use Fibre Optics) are completely covered in LEDs ....... why didn't I notice them before? Must have been distracted by my Barby pink screen ..... :-D:laugh::-D:laugh: Ali

Because we only served the Lowveld area and had to compete against national ISP's, my boss would use the whole "local, we care" marketing ploy, and let subscribers come in and see the equipment. We had whole hubs just sitting there flashing for effect - and they were all most impressed! What really makes me laugh though is the way data is fed back to the user in movies. It types itself across the screen at a nice human readable rate, beeping with each letter that comes up - hilarious and pathetic! :)

Not only that but while the text feeds out nice and slow, they are typing like maniacs with what must be 300wpm speeds. So where do all those keypresses go? Into those infuriating beeps?

Paul Watson wrote: So where do all those keypresses go? Into those infuriating beeps? Of course! I have fond memories of using an old PC-XT, where typing at a rapid rate into a slower program could easily fill the keyboard buffer, resulting in a beep for each key hit 'till the software could process another key. And the video was also slow enough you could read text as it was being displayed. (well, if the ROM BIOS routines were used to display it anyway) So, Fantastic Computers of the Future are, in fact, ancient PCs.
