Explain in less than 60 words and symbols how Moores Law of improvement is doomed by a paradox of time. :-) Regardz Colin J Davies

So is that 60 words and 60 symbols, no more than sixty words and no more than 60 symbols, or no more than 60 words or symbols combined? :) -:suss:Matt Newman / Windows XP Activist:suss:

Colin Davies wrote: Moores Law of improvement is doomed by a paradox of time This is so confusing!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did you mean to say 'the soapbox is doomed and could be improved by Moore's laws of time'? Is 'paradox' the same thing as 'Pandora's Box'? Are you working for the Microsoft documentation team?

Moore's Law[^] states that the number of transistors per square inch in an integrated circuit doubles every 1.5 years, therefore the surface area of the transistors are cut in half. But the transistors cannot become smaller than molecules so eventually this law will not hold. There are also some very interesting side effects of Moores Law in semiconductor manufacturing. First and foremost is the push for 300mm wafers/substrates; since Moore's Law limits the number of devices on can put on a doped substrate we are making larger substrates. For years it has been the 'Holy Grail' of semi' manufacturing. Another interesting side-effect is the new "molecule based" or quantum transistors. Of course the king pin to any manufacturing process is photo-lithography and planarization which completely out lived most of their critics. It is realy very interesting, one could easily loose 70 hours a week because of Mr. Moore and his cursed law. The word abbreviation is awfully long for what it means.

You are on the right track. But like Chris suggests oneday we might be making quantum type processors. If we go below the molecular level to atomic and then to sub particles. Imagine a transistor group state that is defined by the spin of a sub-particle. :-) So giving the engineers some leeway that they will manage to create even more transistors per cubic unit in the future. Will a Time Paradox occur oneday and if so what will cause it ? BTW: While this question was meant more as a teaser for Matt Newman than for serious debate or answers there is some serious thought going into this in some ivory towers. Regardz Colin J Davies
