Editing SQL DB fields in External Content Types
-
I have a client that is interested in using an external content type to surface up data that resides in a SQL database. The objective is to give users the ability to fill in dedicated data and let in sync back to SQL. The good news is that the data connection is working. Here are the two different lists; 1. External List: This meets all my needs as it surfaces up all the fields for editing when use the EditForm.aspx form, but you can not use the Quick Edit format. Hence, you can also not create a Datasheet View, which would serve the same purpose. The client does not want to open this form up. 2. Custom List: In this scenario I am using a external data column. I can select the External Content Type, select a single field, plus additional, but can not edit any of the fields. This would be perfect, as you can use the Quick Edit view. When in "Quick Edit" view, the cells surfacing up from the database or greyed out. I want to edit these. Is this NOT possible??

For external lists/content types, the Quick Edit option is not available for use. https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Differences-between-native-and-external-lists-6601eda9-b722-4bf8-a2bf-ce25cf3d2fd0[^] (9th heading down from the top). It may look be a case where a custom web part or SPD customisations may be the way forward. -DB
