            Because I've known Colin a long time, and I've always taken him as someone who is intelligent (great math skills IMO). It's disturbing to see him fall victim of the cold claw of stupidity and following the line of others simply because "it's the thing to say." In short, I always took him as smarter than that. Come on Ed surely you aren't one of those people who believed in the "new" economy? You know the one where people worked for IPO stock options at companies that never made a penny of profit? The economy that would never see a recession because of the Internet and IT? Hell the stock market fell in because everybody finally realized that they were involved in a pyramid scheme, buying stock in companies that weren't making money. The seeds were sown with the tech bubble, and there was no going back. Ever heard of a russian economist called Kondratiev? Probably not as Stalin did not like him. Anyway, he came up with a theory today known as Kondratiev Waves. But then where is my problem in the following piece of code:

                      bool MakingMoney()
                      {
                      int* GWB = GetPresident();

                      }

                      double Get401KGrowth()
                      {
                      return (Get401KCurrentValue() - Get401KPreviousValue());
                      }

                      MakingMoney() seems to keep returning false! :confused: - Nitron

                              You must have left all your 401k in stocks, hoping to ride that internet bubble a bit too long. Mine have been mostly in Bonds for some time. Get$01KGrowth() returns (an admittedly smallish) positive number... The lesson is not to blame others, but to agressively use your own good sense. Portfolio realocation works, and that bubble was visible a long way off. :) Some ideas are so stupid that only an intellectual could have thought of them - George Orwell

And your government is lowering taxes at the same time! How is that supposed to work? I'm no rocket scientist when it comes to economy, but lowering taxes when the state finance is getting such a blow is beyond me. :confused: -- Shine, enlighten me - shine Shine, awaken me - shine Shine for all your suffering - shine

                                  It's all smoke and mirrors... :rolleyes: Seriously though, the military buys their weapons from almost 100% American suppliers, who employ almost 100% American citizens, who earn a paycheck and pay taxes to support the $64 billion. ;) Even more seriously, would we like to see the billions go into schools, local police, medicine....? Of course. Would we rather pay the billions now and not face another WTC attack or worse? Depends on which side of the fence you're on. Personally, I'd rather we save the money along with all foreign aid (including UN money) and just sit back and watch the rest of the world fuck themselves for a few decades. But thats just one man's opinion. Mike Mullikin :beer:

                                    Come on Ed surely you aren't one of those people who believed in the "new" economy? You know the one where people worked for IPO stock options at companies that never made a penny of profit? The economy that would never see a recession because of the Internet and IT? Hell the stock market fell in because everybody finally realized that they were involved in a pyramid scheme, buying stock in companies that weren't making money. Here's my theory: Bush started trash-talking the economy in late '99 because that was the only way he'd have a chance to get elected. Once he got elected, his tax cuts were passed and started the govt's slide into deficits. After the stock market crashes, tax receipts from capital gains fell and pushed the govt further into deficits. Then came 9/11 and major new spending programs; result, further deficits. Deficits drag the economy down (witness 1986 - 1991 when the Reagan tax cuts and spending spree created deficits) and cause businesses to tighten spending. Especially small businesses which created 90% of the new jobs over the past 15 years. Net result: recession, reduced hiring and additional layoffs, and, eventually, increased interest rates and inflation. It happened before; it's happening again.
