you can get more info, from different sources, without 8 minutes of commercials, in a half hour of surfing the various news sites than you can watching any of the nightly news shows. i wouldn't be surprised if the networks totally abandoned their nightly news broadcasts within the next 5 years. -c

ESPN/ESPN2/Fox Sports Weather Channel CNN/MSNBC/CSNCB/CSpan/CSpan2/FoxNews/BBC/CBC these do everything the nightly local + network news shows do, except local news. and in my area, Time Warner runs a 24/7 North Carolina news channel (yes, it's boring :) ), so that's taken care of too. -c

But they require you to start your PC, connect to a provider and then type in a valid URL. This is far to complex for many (keep in mind we at CP are the in the above average intelligence group.) :-D One lady (elderly) I tried to get to use the PC for typing letters. Could never get her to do it. I learned latter she just would not touch a mouse. ""

Statement 1: I am in favour of invading Iraq in order to remove the Ba'ath party from power. Now either I am getting very biased news reporting here in the UK or what I see is correct , and it frightens me . The US tv news coverage seems as much aimed at the lowest common denominator as the the UK gutter press . In other words it assumes that the average consumer is stupid . This constant need to display the flag , this overusage of the word 'hero', and the vilification of anyone who even questions what is happening is dangerous . Time and again historical events are misrepresented in order to be spoon fed out of the media . I lost count of how many times I have heard that the US , and the US alone , won both world wars. Against that is balanced Al Jazera. Which appears to be doing what the US news (esp FOX) is doing , and that is using gutter press tactics to appeal to those of feable mind . I have got to the stage now where I do not take any news reporting on face value , and my BS filter when watching any news but especially US 'news' is set to max , and still it oozes through . Am I the only one forever playing catch up with technology , while all the juicy opportunites keep rolling by ?

Michael A. Barnhart wrote: It is impossible not to get biased reporting, IMhO. I think it is possible to overstate this argument. For sure, unbiased reporting is difficult to define, let alone observe, but that doesn't mean that a lack of bias is a meaningless concept or a misconceived objective. Fundamentally, a lack of bias is about symmetry. If you make a particular judgement about the behaviour of one side in a dispute, then you should make the same judgement about the same behaviour of the other side in analogous circumstances. If you find evidence compelling when used against one side, then you should find the same sort of evidence compelling when used against the opposite side. To be sure, it is usually possible to come up with some reason why the circumstances are not identical in the two cases being compared, just as it is possible to come up with some sort of rationalisation for almost anything. But some arguments are more plausible than others --- one is not obliged to consider an issue to be seriously in doubt just because not everyone agrees --- and so the potential exists for recognising and distinguishing biased reporting from relatively unbiased reporting. Judgement of bias can be disputed (just as, say, the judgement of guilt or innocence in a murder trial can be disputed) but that doesn't mean the attempt is mistaken. John Carson

Michael A. Barnhart wrote: They (most) do believe that with out US aid the allies would have lost. I think this is correct . But it should be put in context , without the will of the Russians to fight , without the guts and luck of geography of the Brits as well as the economic might of the US the war would have been lost . In essence it was a team effort with all the players bringing their own strengths to the team . The cold war was a different story , without US power there is no way that Europe alone could have opposed the USSR if she decided to invade Germany .We only posses enough weapons to wipe out most of the world , where as the then superpowers have enough to destroy all mankind several times over . Thank goodness it never came to that . Am I the only one forever playing catch up with technology , while all the juicy opportunites keep rolling by ?
