HELP: Connecting 2 computers
-
hi, I have 2 DELL laptops, wich I connect to my office server. Now, at home, I need to connect these 2. One runs Win2K Prof. and the other NT4. I need to connect them thru network card - all the hardware is ready & and the cbales are connected. How should I go about connecting them..? The main purpose is to share the internet access. I have only one phone line, but I need to share the connection in 2 machines, by connecting them thru the network card.

This will depend on if you have a HUB to connect the laptop's network cables too. If you do you just need to plug both cables into the network cards and then into 2 ports on the HUB. If you do not have a HUB then you will need to purchase a crossover ethernet cable (can get them at any computer store) and plug this directly into both network cards. This completes the hardware/physical setup. Next the laptop's need to be able to see/talk to each other. You need to determine how the TCP/IP network settings are set for each laptop (they should be DHCP enabled but you never know). On the NT4 laptop, Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Network Applet, click the Protocol tab, select TCP/IP Properties and click Properties. In here I suspect it will be set to 'Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server' if it is not you will need to write the IP Address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway down as you will need to set these back to their original settings to get the laptop to work again in the office. If it is set it to 'Specify an IP address' then set these values IP Address 192.168.0.1 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 192.168.0.1. This will require a reboot. On the Win2K laptop, Start -> Settings -> Network and Dial-up Connections -> Local Area Connection, click Properties, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) click Properties. As with NT4 if 'Specify an IP Address' is selected write down the values so you can reset them later for the office then set the following values IP Address 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 192.168.0.1. This will not require a reboot. That should be all you need to do to get the 2 laptop's talking to each, haven't used Internet Sharing yet so can't help you there. Before you ga back to the office you will need to reset the TCP/IP settings for each laptop, either set to old values you wrote down or 'Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server' if that is what was there before.
