Under "FAQS: Why is Microsoft making this change?" should be the real answer ... Because we aren't getting enough share of the browser market so have to find more ways to force users to open sites with Edge.

Which is a shame, Edge is far superior to Chrome (oh, the irony!), Safari, and in some but not all ways, Firefox. The stigma created by IE is affecting the adoption of Edge.
There are no solutions, only trade-offs.
