Until its not. Ever since computers have been able to talk to each other in a "reliable" fashion, there's been a constant back-and-forth between centralized and decentralized software. Lets off load from the mainframe to minis! Distributed data sucks! Lets bring all the data back to the mainframe! PC's are the wave of the future, move all software out to the PCs! I can't get my monthly report because the internet is down? Repatriate everything back to the server farm! Why can't I run this stuff on my phone? yada yada yada ... This is just the next round in this never-ending cycle. Eventually the CEO of MegaCorp is going to want to access something that's not available because either the cloud is not available, or a rental payment went astray. Or the CFO is going to do some math and realize a purchase with upgrade fees works out better for the bottom line, and software ownership will be considered best practice. Or rivals using a purchase model will start to eat MS lunch. Or ...
