Last week or so we started getting "spam phone calls" from someone I and the rest of my family don't know who it is. When we answer the phone there's nobody there and the caller display reports an unlisted number. It happpens about 3 times a day now and it's really annoying! Last week I received a total of 25 "NUMBER WITHHELD" phonecalls while I was at work. At one at some ungodly hour on Saturday morning. None left a message. I can't imagine anything being that important that they wouldn't leave a message. Anyway, if I had managed to answer the phone in time on Saturday morning they would have spoken with someone who would have been totally incomprehensible who was complaining about being woken after only 4 hours of sleep. --Colin Mackay--

I just got so hacked off with all these "dead" calls and telemarketing that I recently registered with these guys: telephone preference register[^] time will tell if it makes a difference: it suggests 28 days as the lead time. Debbie

I registered with them also. But your registration expires after a while. Certainly since I registered I've not received any "You've won a holiday", "Would you like a new kitchen?" etc. calls. The registration may have expired for me and that's where all these calls have come from. But as I didn't answer any I don't know. --Colin Mackay--

Hook up a fax machine to your phone line for a couple of days. Have it answer all calls. That not only stops the calls, it usually gets your number removed from the call list. :) Chris Meech We're more like a hobbiest in a Home Depot drooling at all the shiny power tools, rather than a craftsman that makes the chair to an exacting level of comfort by measuring the customer's butt. It provides a worse irritation to the caller. Also when they realize it is a fax machine, the caller will drop the number from the list ( or transfer it over to their fax list :( ). Wouldn't it be better to answer and give them the f-word combined with suitable nouns, prepositions, adjectives and adverbs? -- Gott weiß ich will kein Engel sein.

The problem is that 25% of the time, there will be nobody at the other end as other people were unlucky enough to answer the phone quicker.
