How do you guys find names for your projects/programs? I find it very hard and right now I'm doing a design spec for a nameless project I can't figure out a name for. :~ Rickard Andersson Here is my card, contact me later! UIN: 50302279 Sonork: 37318

Good question. I hate official project names based on some accounting process. Such as project z123.94. In most cases I look at what or who the project is for and then try to come up with a name that is cool. Management does not always like that. Once I was building a product for a company named C3 and hence named the project C3PO. The client loved it but my own company's management hated it. This wasn't even the name of the product, just an internal project name sigh!!! On the other hand, in the interest of good documentation, I guess the project name should make some business sense :-)

And finding names for classes, members, varibles... Sometimes it takes longer finding a classname than writing the class. /Magnus

Currently I am working through the characters from Gormenghast[^]. Pretty good for related projects in our system, as there are lots of the buggers. My middle tier is steerpike( The main protagonist and a machievelian bastard), front end is named after the prince, minor characters for nasty ulilities. The muppet show can be handy too, but marketing tend to get annoyed. Ryan

The first thing you need to do is make a list of all the acronyms which have not been used yet. Then you pick one from that list. (See how simple that was?) ------------------------------------------ Well, let that be a lesson to you about going around throwing out bathwater without checking its contents first.

If it's for work, we go through a rigorous system involving lawyers trademark searches, internet searches etc etc. Obviously your not doing something that will be public or your risking your ass if you are and not being more careful. For hobby programming and non-public in-house apps I pick something that strikes my fancy that day and run with it forever afterwards. For example, I wrote an in-house service app once for a place I was contracted to and when it came time for a name I looked around, spotted a bottle of Windex and called it "Windex". They are still using it years later and it's still called Windex.
