The internal connection for a wifi/etc card in a laptop is a mini PCIe port, also a 1x slot. However since a PCIe lane has either 250 or 500MB/sec of bandwidth (1.0 vs 2.0 spec) in each direction unless you're connected to a gigabit lan with a high end server on the other side a 1x slot is more than sufficient internal bandwidth.
