thanks, the article was really helpful. i used BSTR to pass the array safely among processes. i thought i needed some structure like BSTR for this, but couldn't imagine the solution would be BSTR itself :) WM_COPYDATA is useful too, but since my UserBroker does not have a window, i can't send the message to anywhere else. thanks again

uh,i had to hack my code much more throughly to see it was all about rectangles.i found out that the toolbar had one of the items resized after i created the tooltip (with the wrong rectangles). and i added a TB_SETTOOLTIPS message right after the TTM_ADDTOOL.works just fine now,thanks for everything :)

having tried the "excitinnnng" 'MessageBox Debugging' i've come to a conlcusion that the problem is lParam,which supposedly should carry the handle of the menu,does not carry the handle of the menu which it supposedly should carry... to get it clear: win98 can't give the correct menu handle for the message WM_MENUCOMMAND.i am unable to find which handle it shows but certainly it is not the right one. the problem should be that i am creating the menu at runtime,which changes the handle everytime the menu is opened,and dearest win98 can not update the handle.so any function that takes HMENU of the menu returns -1 with GetLastError 0. but i still need to use GetMenuItemInfo to take the string of the menu item at the correct index,but function also requires the HMENU (which win98 can't give correctly). any suggestions,anyone?

It's probably more that it's compiled with run-time checks on (/RTC1 flag) - the compiler can put in extra code when compiling to help find problems like overwriting bits of the stack or heap you shouldn't do. This requires stack/heap to be initialised to known values, which it does (it actually sets them to 0xcccccccc). These values are probably recognisable as invalid by DoModal (or IsWindow, or something), so it just rejects them. In Release, the HWND isn't initialised at all, so may contain a value that *could* be a valid HWND, causing the crash?
