This has always been my lucky day. In fact it was 10 years ago today that I got engaged to my wife. Oct 13, 1990 (which was another friday by the way

  • ClassWizard comes and goes ...

There's more. If you renumber the resource symbols in a resource.h file whilst the project using it is open, the symbol names in the resources can be lost and replaced by their old(!) literal values - so IDB_BITMAP becomes 20114...with much badness resulting. This seems to be because the Resource Editor caches the information in the .aps file. Deleting it (you have to exit the project first, since its locked for exclusive access) seems to sort it out. I found this out the hard way when I wrote an Add-In which includes a wizard to renumber resource symbols. If I find a decent fix I'll post it on the website - until then its just too damn dangerous

  • So what's the future of web advertising?
    L Lost User

I know I don't look at banner ads. The only time I have seen web advertising work in any sense is on launch.com when I selected a music video. They play a quick 8 second ad up front before the video comes on. That, in my opinion, is the only way to guarantee that anyone looks at an ad. (And what do you know, it's based on TV!) The future of Web advertising may just be the same ol' crap we're used to already. Brando

  • depends on what you get used to

I have worked in the Silicon Valley for quite sometime and have right now moved to columbus , ohio . What I miss the most is the work culture . Columbus is a "lazy technical city" . The engineers out here are not agressive barring a few . All the do is fix meetings the whole year round and talk , talk and talk . It's the few workhorses that get the job done on time . In Silicon Valley , the air is so inspiring and drives you to work and innovate all the time . The people are very technically baised and believe in less talk and "get work done" theory . That's what appealed to me most . If you are single , need a great job to work admist techincal gurus , need a place where reno , tahoe , napa valley , SF bay , point reyes , etc etc etc is just a weekend away from your reach , I'd suggest the valley . Fremont is a great city to live in ( if you work in the valley ) except the commute sometimes can get carzy . If were given the choice , i'd choose a 1 hour commute to a lifetime boredum in columbus , ohio .

  • Best city to work?
    L Lost User

Looking at the big picture , i'd say columbus is a beautiful calm and peaceful place , but if you're an engineer by profession and would love be amongst the teachheads , columbus is definitely not the place to be in . If you've worked long enough to decide that it's time to golf and rest in peace , columbus is definitely the place . Most of the folks out here groom a pot belly , gain a few pounds , gossip more , work less and that's what IT life in columbus is all about . In the valley , you'd never encounter these attributes as people are too busy keeping themselves alive . As I mentioned there is something in the air that is so insipring in the valley that you are driven to work and have fun too . I a lot of ways i miss the valley but sometimes columbus seems good too , but you ought to step up your proiorities and decide on what you are aiming to achieve

Seattle of course! The work is fun and diverse. The traffic is much better than SF, LA, Atlanta and Chicago. IMHO. The salaries are excellent and highly competitive. Sign up to be a MS usability person and get software for free for only an hour or 2 of your time. Lots to do and see. The only downer is that housing can get expensive, but you can find inexpensive gems too. Now I know everyone (or almost everyone) thinks "but it rains an aweful lot there". Not so true, it doesn't rain here anymore than anywhere else. It just doesn't freeze as often so you don't get the snow collection and icey roads in the winter months, as you would east of the cascades and just west of them. Oooh and you can't forget the coffee shops every 2 blocks and the microbrews.

  • C# Decompiler - Is it possible !!!
    L Lost User

I think the 'decompiler' Chris is talking about is the ILDASM tool which decompiles your managed code to IL. I've looked at IL and it's like glorified assembly so if you're not worried about someone reading your code in assembly then I'm not sure you have to sweat IL.

I agree with Erik. I work peripherally on our company's security system for our applications (hardware protection) and honestly at the end of the day as hard as we try we just end up shaking our heads and saying "All we can do is keep the honest people honest and make it really hard to crack, but it CAN be cracked" Frank, I'm curious what your app is? As you said, if it's worth cracking, that's a compliment in a strange way and probably a worthwhile program. Maybe I could use it. :) Good luck ... Ps. Funny story; I searched the web once for stuff related to our app and found a request for a dongle crack on a message board. The person had used their real name so we looked in our database and found the person was a client. I guess they didn't want to pay for second copy!

Thank you Christian. All this time I thought CUJ (and WDJ) had something against me personally. I can't recount how often and how many different ways I've tried to subscribe to these magazines. I've phoned, e-mailed, and even faxed all my info with payment and I've received nothing. Not even a bill, at least they tried to get your money! Believe me I'm not blowing this out of proportion. I can't get these folks to acknowledge me. Maybe it's my ranting :) Anyway after a year I gave up and just pick it if one of the 5 copies in the city aren't already sold. I reckon they have some serious subscription handling problems which need to be fixed but after all this time surely they know they have a problem

  • Congratulations Australia!!
    L Lost User

Yes the Aussie's have put on quite a Games so far. The venues are amazing. Look at the beauty of the Triathlon circuit or even holding Sailing events right in the harbour instead of having to travel away from the host city as is the custom. Leslie you brought up 2 points near and dear to me as a Canadian. First I have to say the U.S. coverage is quite ridiculous. I'm talking about sports coverage not the opening ceremonies. NBC has paid $4 billion and will not show one minute of live coverage. Everything is taped and edited I'm assuming so they can put a dramatic twist on the event or highlight American athletes no matter where they finish. I have some American friends in Vermont who are very happy they can get Canadian coverage which include over 500 hours of live coverage! NBC has 60 hours of taped coverage. I reckon it's tough to be a sports fan in the U.S. Second, It's amazing what Australia is achieving with their medal wins. Canada has more people and we only have 2 medals with not may prospects left. I love the way sports are so revered in Australia and so well supported by the people. This topic is coming up nightly in the news here in Canada. All the officials are wondering how the Australian system works and how we can reproduce it. Of course it takes money but it's sad to say I don't think the people will go for it because they don't have the same respect for amateur athletics as in Australia.
