I have had that happen to me before, although probably not to the extent that you might have. One thing I did notice was that for some reason, if I had certain project files open, it would always say the files were out of date. Perhaps you could try closing all visible files(not the project itself), and try again. If that's not it, then I really don't know what is. <NOTE:This message in no means reflects the actuall thoughts, concerns, or opinions of the author, the president, or the rat living in your walls. And to think that I was actually thinking about getting some of those credentials to help me get a job doing what I already love doing. Oh well, guess I'll just stay in my current job of Shift Supervisor at Burger King, earning a measly $7.50 an hour. <NOTE:This message in no means reflects the actuall thoughts, concerns, or opinions of the author, the president, or the rat living in your walls. • Install Shield Wizard
    M Magius96

Ok, I'm creating an Installation using MS Install Shield Wizard. My installation has 3 components. I need to know how to see if a certain component is being installed, so that I can place a shortcut on the desktop, and in the startmenu-programs folder, only if that component is being installed. The two components I need to check are named "CFW Source files" and "CFW Server files", the third component is not important for this, because it only contains system dll files. What I'm trying to do, is if the user installs only the source files, then I want to create a shortcut to the project file(circle.dsw). And if the user installs the server files, I want to create a shortcut to the program file(CFW.exe). What I don't want to do, is create either of those shortcuts, if those files are not being installed. I already know how to create the shortcuts. I just need to know how to make them depending upon which component was installed. "Don't tell me I'm smart, I might actually believe you!"

  • I give up
    M Magius96

My apologies are fully extended. My opinion was based upon my own experience. Although I just joined the forums today, I have been here quite some time, mostly using the articles as reference materials. All in all, I believe it to be almost 2 months since I started coming here. In those two short months, I have run across an extreme few articles that weren't of any help. Then again, that is just my experience, and doesn't necessarily reflect upon what is really going on. Perhaps after browsing a few more month, I may notice the same trend. If that is the case, then I would agree with him, to an extent. None-the less, thank you for pointing out my error. "Don't tell me I'm smart, I might actually believe you!"

Allow me to let you know who I am, before I continue. You can call me Magius96(for the purpose of this forum). I'm self taught in the methods of programing. So far, I've taught myself Visual Basic, C, C++, HTML, and now Visual C++. In my attempts to learn on my own, I've had to use many references. I only own 2 books on programing, those being "Teach Yourself C in 24 hours", and "Teach Yourself Visual C++ 6 in 21 days", both from Sam's publisher. I had learned GW-Basic first, way back when my Tandy 2000 HX was still considered up to date. That's what gave me the ground work for learning Visual Basic, and the rest. Even though, I had that bit of ground work, and the reference materials, there often comes a time when nothing I have will provide me with an answer. Quite often, the answer I seek, is something you take for granted that everybody knows already. But there are those like myself, who don't, because we're self taught. It's because of this, that I enjoy seeing people write and submit articles/tutorials. It doesn't matter to me how lame, or stupid they may sound. Even if I already knew the information, I'm still gladdened by the fact that someone, somewhere, took the time to at least try and help someone else try to learn. No, I have never submitted an articles/tutorial, and I probably never will. The major reason being that, even if I did find something to make an article on, I could probably find an article on the internet written about it already. And if not, then I can assume, that someone, with more experience, and qualification, will write it later. In closing, just because they are new at programing, doesn't mean they can't write a good article. Even if thier english is not the best, they can still be informative. And even if you already knew it all, someone else didn't. So, if you already know everything an article has to say, be happy that someone wrote it to help someone else learn. That's just one more question you won't have to answer in the forums later. "Don't tell me I'm smart, I might actually believe you!"

I'll make my argument short, sweet, and simple. Though many of you seem to be focusing upon the life and death of other creatures that live upon this starship we call earth, I assure you, there is much more at stake here than meets the eye. Granted our deforestation takes away the homes of countless animals, who can not survive outside of the wilderness of the jungle, there is still more, that we don't see. We see the deforestation caused by our need for paper. We see the pollution in the air, caused by our factories. We see the dirty water, from overrun sewage treatement plants, and chemical spills. But what are we not seeing? We constantly drill for oil, all over the world. As that oil is used up, it leaves a pocket of emptiness in the earth. We constantly dig for diamonds, gold, and other minerals, once again, leaving pockets in the earth. One would argue that the planet has also created it's own pockets of emptiness, thus refering to caverns and caves. While this is true, it still doesn't justify the fact, that we're destroying the planet from the inside out, as well as the outside in. You see, each day, as we're digging up the earth, we're putting more and more of what was inside the earth, on the top of the earth. Over a vast period of time, this will cause the earth to become larger, and hollow. Being hollow, there will thus be less gravity. Less gravity, means that there will be less pressure on the inside of the planet, thus the world will experience what I like to call, "Freeze over". Although the sun will warm the surface of the planet by day, the chill from under the ground, will cause the planet to freeze overnight. No, this prediction will not come in the next thousands of years. But rest assured, it will happen in the scope of time. I'm not saying that we shouldn't worry about all the rest of the problem, because, they are more important than this one. I'm just throwing some information, that many people might not have thought of already. In my opinion, the overall best way to "Heal" the world, from the destruction that we have caused, is to get rid of "Humans" all together. Yes, take us out of the picture, and the planet will fix all the wrongs we have done itself. No, it won't happen overnight either. You see, for the planet to fix the damage that we do in one day, it would take approximately 1,000 years. This means, that the longer we remain upon this planet, the longer it will be before it can fix itself, through natural means. Before you flame me for this post,

Hmm, this seems to be kinda my area to watch. Although my suggestions have nothing to do with coding. There are a few programs online that you can download that will do pretty much what your asking for. I think one such program was called NetWatcher. Perhaps a search on Yahoo, Google, or some other search engine using the keywords, "Net Monitor, Net watcher, IPX logger, Connection watcher" or some similiar keyword might dredge up some good results. Ok, now that I've got that much working, perhaps you'd entertain me to give me a suggestion(tease me more like it), on how to convert a CString to char. I'm passing command line arguments from a user interface, but the darn compiler is complaining that they must be char's and not CString class. My luck eh? Almost complete, and I throw a wrench into the darn thing. "Don't tell me I'm smart, I might actually believe you!"

Your answer, although informational, was still a bit cryptic. However, you did give me enough information to work with, that I could use msdn.microsoft.com to find the rest. This little bit of sample code, along with your advice, lead me to just what I was looking for. STARTUPINFO si; PROCESS_INFORMATION pi; ZeroMemory( &si, sizeof(si) ); si.cb = sizeof(si); ZeroMemory( &pi, sizeof(pi) ); // Start the child process. if( !CreateProcess( NULL, // No module name (use command line). "MyChildProcess", // Command line. NULL, // Process handle not inheritable. NULL, // Thread handle not inheritable. FALSE, // Set handle inheritance to FALSE. 0, // No creation flags. NULL, // Use parent's environment block. NULL, // Use parent's starting directory. &si, // Pointer to STARTUPINFO structure. &pi ) // Pointer to PROCESS_INFORMATION structure. ) { ErrorExit( "CreateProcess failed." ); } // Wait until child process exits. WaitForSingleObject( pi.hProcess, INFINITE ); // Close process and thread handles. CloseHandle( pi.hProcess ); CloseHandle( pi.hThread ); "Don't tell me I'm smart, I might actually believe you!"

After doing some rather deep digging here in the forums, I've found the following snippet: STARTUPINFO siInfo; PROCESS_INFORMATION piInfo; siInfo.cb = sizeof(STARTUPINFO); siInfo.lpReserved = 0; siInfo.lpDesktop = NULL; siInfo.lpTitle = NULL; siInfo.dwFlags = STARTF_USESHOWWINDOW; siInfo.cbReserved2 = 0; siInfo.lpReserved2 = NULL; CreateProcess("F:\\path\\program.exe", "", NULL, NULL, false, NORMAL_PRIORITY_CLASS, NULL, "F:\\path\\", &siInfo, &piInfo); Now, you were saying to pass the handle to WaitForSingleObject(), but which of the above is the handle? (plus, i'm still slightly confused on what all that is, but if it works, great) "Don't tell me I'm smart, I might actually believe you!"

    M Magius96

Your answer seems to be closer to what I'm looking for, in that it sounds like I'd be checking for Prog2 by it's process id. That is precisely what I'm hoping for. The problem I'm having is that the book I've learned VC++ from doesn't give much(if any) information regarding CreateProcess() or WaitForSingleObject(). By typing them into my project, I can see what arguments they require, but I don't fully understand them. Guess I need a more advanced book than "Sam's Teach Yourself Visual C++ 6 in 21 Days", eh? (whew, long title, don't hold your breath while saying it) --EDIT-- Actually, now that I look at it. I do understand how to use WaitForSingleObject(), but I'm still confused on CreateProcess(). Oh, well, give me a few days, and I might puzzle that one out too. --END EDIT-- "Don't tell me I'm smart, I might actually believe you!"

Thanks for the advice, but I can't use the first suggestion, because Prog2 is actually a dos program, and several copies of it could be running at once. I also can't use the 2nd suggestion, because Prog2 is already compiled. "Don't tell me I'm smart, I might actually believe you!"

This may sound stupid, but here we go anyways. Let's say I have 2 applications. (Prog1 and Prog2) What I want to do, is have Prog1 run Prog2, then periodically check to see if Prog2 is still running. Obviously I'll need a timer event to do this, but I don't know how to start Prog2, or see if it's still running. If you can tell me that much, I can do the rest, and will be very gratefull. NOTE: I do know how to start Prog2 using WinExec() and ShellExecute(), but I have a sneaky suspicion that I'll need to use CreateProcess(), of which I know nothing.
