well, steve, what i suggested was the simplest way and the basic algorithm. If the need of checking inside strings is required, then it could very well be checked too. I suggest either use a masked edit control, or handle the ON_ENCHANGE notification. If any 'invalid' characters are found in the edit control, disable the OK button. "Money talks. Christian's solution will work for the most part. I'd just add that after you select a file, use CFile::GetStatus to determine if it exists or not. The method will return TRUE if it succeeds, and FALSE if the file/directory doesn't exist.
