You could just call the menu handler directly - OnFileNew(). The other way (as you suggest) is to send a WM_COMMAND message with the ID_FILE_NEW command ID to your main window (not to the document directly). that was it ! I just added a line of code in the BN_CLICKED message handler to remove the "BS_DEFPUSHBUTTON" style. The trouble was that multiple buttons showed this dark outline which looked goofy. Thanks
