I know we have gone through this before in the lounge but I was wonder if anyone could give me some help. I have about an hour train ride from home and work everyday and well I wanted to mix up my reading a little bit. I read books sometimes and sometimes I am more in the mood for a magazine. I picked up Dr. Dobbs general at the train station and it is not to bad. I was wondering if anyone knew of some good software development magazines that I could subscribe too. Thanks for your help!

We shouldn't assume something's debugged just because everyone in the whole world has access to the source code.

depends on if you want algorithm development and theory or code. As mentioned above those two magazines are great. I hardly ever read my Queue from my ACM membership, but since I am in the graphics business, I always read my Siggraph journals. ACM, although expensive (work reimburses mine most years so generally I spend same as any other magazine over a 5 year period for the one or two times they do not reimburse). The advantage in the SIG journals is that you can choose one specifically for your career path. If you want human interface methods and haptics, they have a specialty group for you, graphics like me, Siggraph is great, databases there is another, etc. If you are a student (and get the price reductions), or if you get reimbursed by work I would recommend joining ACM and at least one SIG for the journals. If you pay for it out of your own pocket, I would be more hesitant to recommend it. However, if you have a PDA you can download the tutorials and actually do training during your commute which makes up the costs. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. I agree with Bob on the CUJ. "we must lose precision to make significant statements about complex systems." -deKorvin on uncertainty

I like Dr Dobb's Journal, have been a subscriber of them for over 8 years. C/C++ User Journal is another one that rocks. Visual Studio Magazine is another really good one. I do sometimes get my hands on an ACM. I think it does not hurt to have several different magazines on hand if one can afford it. I know every time my Dr. Dobb's is up for renewal, they cut me a good deal. CMP publishing, who does Dr Dobb's, also does Software Developer Magazine and I've glanced at that magazine and it looks as if it is also another very worthy magazine to have. Have a great day, Paul
