I could have told you this sort of thing was happening years ago. Ever since the likes of RentACoder sprung up it was obvious it was happening. When I first looked at RentACoder (probably abour 3 years ago) half the things on it were homework assignments. When I think of outsourcing: a) I think of legitimate struggling companies with deadlines and budget problems trying to get something done to help their business suceed and grow; b) I think of legitimate profitable companies that are trying to dump their high paid inhouse staff for lower paid people to improve their profit margin and make their stockholders happy. I don't think of rentacoder. It really aren't in the same league. There must be a name for what rentacoder does, and it probably isn't a very nice name. Maybe the Japanese have a catchy phrase for this cultural phenomenon. ;P Marc Pensieve

When I was in college, there were kids who'd do other students' assignments for them for a fee - that was before the internet was popular in India. I don't think this is a new phenomenon and certainly not one restricted to American kids :-) Regards, Nish

I used to be asked to do people's computing assignments at college quite a lot - this was in the early days of computing being incorporated in nearly every other discipline. I never did the assignmenmts but would often mentor/tutor in exchange for beer n ciggies. The only thing different here is the use of the internet - oh, and another excuse for the WSJ to go all nationalist and protectionist to please its readership ;) '--8<------------------------ Ex Datis: Duncan Jones Merrion Computing Ltd

I think it's great - it gives developers who actually know how to write software a much better chance of finding employment, as students who use RAC (and other such services) will fall flat on their faces in a technical interview. That is, if they ever make it that far. :) /ravi My new year's resolution: 2048 x 1536 Home | Music | Articles | Freeware | Trips ravib(at)ravib(dot)com

I believe that even today, any credible arts program will require 1st year students to take some course that is from the maths or sciences programs. Stuff like statistics or dynamics. Really elementary stuff, but forces to use your brain somewhat. I just went out and found the ones without a brain and helped them out. :) Chris Meech I am Canadian. [heard in a local bar] Remember that in Texas, Gun Control is hitting what you aim at. Actually, that's not a bad idea and it works both ways. We were required to do (and only had a choice of) hard sciences when I did my CS degree. Requiring an arts-based unit would've been a great move.

Well, as the man says, those that cheat this way because they're busy doing other things will not be very busy once they leave college. I'll now contradict myself and tell you about the lad who used to live across the road from me when I was about 13. He was doing O levels (exams taken at age 16), one of which was computer science and had a coursework module. I spent ages helping him code this thing, but of course when it came to the exams he flunked it in a big way and left school with no grades. These days he tiles roofs for a living and probably earns about twice as much as me :wtf:

It's no different than companies doing it. Companies do it for an extra dollar and lazy students do it for extra time to goof off. Your obsession with "foreigners" has played a trick on you. If anything, the article shows why outsourcing is necessary... our kids can't/won't do the job. Of course, it is all bull for the weakest minds among us.

So he gets a degree but is unable to pass an interview. Big woop. I knew a guy in college that charged $50 for small CS projects. He cleared about $1500-2000 a month mostly from Business majors etc. where CS wasn't their primary focus. Todd Smith
