Yeah, it amazes me that it gets such high ratings. Kind of scary :omg: BTW Paul, I enjoy your photography (and sites)! You do great work! Rocky <>< Latest Post: SQL2005 Server Managemnet Studio timeouts! Blog: www.RockyMoore.com/TheCoder/[^]

These are not the gentle Britsih comedies of years gone by: they are much more farcical, perhaps a little like Benny Hill whom, for some bizarre reason, Yanks adore or peurile like Bottom. Cold Feet was probably the best but was not a comedy as much as a drama series with amusing bits. American comedy, especially situational comedy, is far superior to British comedy now: look at Frasier, 2 and a half men, Becker, Raymond. These are funny shows (all on Paramount in the UK). Anyway, neither of us are right or wrong: it's just a comedic opinion.

I think British situational comedy simply doesn't get the airing, and therefore chance, that U.S. sitcom does. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Colib and ilikecameras. K(arl) wrote: oh, and BTW, CHRISTIAN ISN'T A PARADOX, HE IS A TASMANIAN!

I  the US version of The Office, and have read the praise that the original UK version gets. I got the UK version today (12 eps, 2 seasons I guess?), and after watching the first 6, I just don't get it. There are maybe 3 or 4 laughs in each show; the rest of the time it's David being dumb, not funny. At least when Michael Scott cooks his foot, they build the entire show's humour around it. Not to mention that Tim/Dawn have nowhere near the on-screen chemistry that Jim/Pam do. --Mike-- Visual C++ MVP  LINKS~! Ericahist | NEW!! Just a difference in cultures. We do have them you know! I found the US verison a bit cringeworthy, but can imagine US offices are like that. Also things are more politically correct in the US I find, having worked for a US company for 5 years up until a couple of years ago. I get the US jokes but they are more direct I think. The UK version is what the UK is like, though overplayed, which makes it just painfully funny for me. I don't want to watch, and I know I have too. The British quite like sarcastic humour, such as Blackadder which I don't think the US understands at all, which is a shame as its probably the funniest TV series in the past 20 years. I have heard Red Dwarf has a small cult following in the US.

It is really sad to see how thin Teri Hatcher has become. I used to really like her as 'Lois Lane' in Superman, but now she is a mess. I kind of enjoyed the first season of the show. You've got to love a show which deals with suicide, murder and child-kidnapping in such a light and frothy context. Michael CP Blog [^] Development Blog [^]

English humour often goes unnoticed by Americans. It was the same with the Goon show. You either get it or you dont. Nunc est bibendum

What, American comedy superior? Frasier better than the Office? Your calcified brain just doesnt get it. The Office is superb situation comedy, if you dont see it then you dont see the subteltey of it. It makes Frasier look like sad old crap (which it is). The ONLY good US comedy at the moment is the 'gross out' kind. 'Theres something about mary', 'American Pie' etc. Re UK vs US comedy. Alf Garnet got sold to the US networks and became Crosby. How pathetic, n the transition it totally lost all its edge. Nunc est bibendum

What the fuck do you know? Look where you are: the most humorless country in all of ID Creation. You wouldn't know a joke if it came up behind you and, well, you know... Okay, Frasier is getting dated but 2 and a half men is VERY funny. Have you seen any of these? If not then kep your crass comments to yourself. The office is shite of the lowest order: I didn't laugh once and I laugh at pretty much anything. I've been shusshed at the theatre when watching a comedy cos I laugh so much. Alf Garnett did not become Cosby: it became "all in the family" (correct that if slightly out) which was shite as well. Cosby is a self-important twat whose best work was as Robert Culps' token black-man 40 odd years ago in a stupid spy program. Ah, the joy of rambling...

I haven't seen much of the US version, but from what I did see the UK original was funnier IMO. The scene where David does Keith's appraisal had me ROTFL  And Gareth is brilliant every time! But I might have to give the US version another chance. BTW there are two more episodes after season 2 - the christmas specials - which apart providing an end to the whole story also have some good laughs.

That's what appealed to me about it. On the surface these people have it all, but underneath there's a lot of dark stuff going on which is gradually exposed across the series. I do wonder if they'll be able to keep the momentum in the second season though.

This is simply not the case: most of the programs mentioned above display elements of irony, sarcasm and the dry wit for which we were always best known and whilst Frasier did descend into farce from time-to-time it was funny. I hate to mention 'Friends' but even that was amusing.

This is simply not the case: most of the programs mentioned above display elements of irony, sarcasm and the dry wit for which we were always best known and whilst Frasier did descend into farce from time-to-time it was funny. I hate to mention 'Friends' but even that was amusing.

#1 Its the flems who love the UK comedy. I guess the waloons watch french comedy as they can only speak french. (And french conmedy is, what, like circuis comedy, old fashioned and obvious) #2 If anyone has in island mentality it is the monoculture that the US is. The UK has the least Island mentality of any country in Europe. Look at the amount of US crap we get on our TV, and Australian, stuff (which is often vewry funny too) #3 Wrong, wrong, wrong. FRIENDS! OH MY GOD, WHAT A PILE OF FORMULAIC CRAP! Have you seen the early Red Dwarf? Now that is just outstanding comedy. The anti gravity forks and spagehtti routine was sublime. And the whole conecpt of a cat that evolves, into the creature played by dany whatshisname is brilliant! Nunc est bibendum

Least island mentality? Au contraire. I said that I hate to mention it. Duh! Red dwarf was ok. (he said grudgingly) I still laugh at Fawlty Towers: the car beating scene still makes me cry.
