Having passed my driving test a few weeks ago and with a bit of spare cash on the hip I decided to buy myself a car. After a few weeks looking for the most economical, sensible car with the cheapest insurance, I said Fuck it and bought a Mazda Mx-5 (I believe they're called Miata in the US). By the way, that's not my car - mine is similar but a little newer. I've got a feeling I'm trying to compensate for being a programmer. What do you think??? I think you shoulda bought a Hyundai. At least they have a 100,000 mile warranty. Of course, if you were TRULY concerned about going fast regardless of the pracfticality or insurance considerations, you could have bought an A/C Cobra kit car with a 427 side-oiler topped off with four 60mm down-draft Webers. I think they run about $90,000 (turn-key) delivered, and the insurance would probably cost you a couple grand every year... John, whats with the carbuerettor measurements. I mean you mention distance in miles, engine size in cubic inches but then follow it up with carbuerettor size in millimetres. Well, Webers are measured that way, and the common reference to the size of their venturis is in millimeters (notice the correct spelling there - :) ). that's how you order them, so that's how you refer to them. :) If I was going to order caretr or Holley carbs (with Carter being the preferred choice for me), I'd order them according to their advertised flow rate (CFM). When you work on *very* fast cars, you can't afford to be a measurement snob. :) "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001

Definitely a worthy choice, but a more extreme choice would have been a Harley. You don't often see "biker" and "computer programmer" in the same sentence referring to a single person. How about this... A 1969 Datsun 2000 Roadster with a supercharged Buick V-6... I think THAT would be way un-geeky. "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001

Guess we sometimes forget how much money we get here in the UK and in the US. Some of the guys I work with earn far more than me so I sometimes forget the value of money. Also, driving into a car park filled with Porsche, Lotus and BMWs gives you a false sense of what kind of car you should be driving :) James Spibey I love the word naked, it's brilliant isn't it, 'naked'. When I was a kid I used to write the word naked on a bit of paper hundreds of times and rub my face in it - Jeff, Coupling, BBC2
