Having passed my driving test a few weeks ago and with a bit of spare cash on the hip I decided to buy myself a car. After a few weeks looking for the most economical, sensible car with the cheapest insurance, I said Fuck it and bought a Mazda Mx-5 (I believe they're called Miata in the US). By the way, that's not my car - mine is similar but a little newer. I've got a feeling I'm trying to compensate for being a programmer. What do you think??? Guess we sometimes forget how much money we get here in the UK and in the US. Some of the guys I work with earn far more than me so I sometimes forget the value of money. Definitely a worthy choice, but a more extreme choice would have been a Harley. You don't often see "biker" and "computer programmer" in the same sentence referring to a single person. How about this... A 1969 Datsun 2000 Roadster with a supercharged Buick V-6... I think THAT would be way un-geeky. But it's the last of the classic boxy BMWs and has all wheel drive (and recently, an MP3 player), so it's kinda geekish. Oh, and 4 doors too, so I can't be accused of being "cool". A couple of years back I was hauled up by a state trooper for doing 85 (I wasn't thinking). He took one look at my short haircut, glasses and pocket protector and let me off with a warning. I have the Harley (look like an asshole, nobody messes with me), a Ford pickup (look like a redneck, nobody thinks I care if they mess with me), and Buick Park Avenue (looks like I'm too old to hear them if they mess with me). I could be earning minimum 6000 pounds if I worked in London, that is 96000 Rand a month (almost my whole South African annual salary.) London/UK is really expensive living wise, but things like manufactured goods (e.g. cars, electronic goods etc.) are much cheaper than here as we have to import all of ours and our currency is very weak. Congradulations! Now you have a hole in the water to pour money into. Is it a sail or motor boat? I've got a 15 foot day sailer. My next step is something about 20 feet with at least a small cabin.

I'd sure like a stinkpot, but all I can afford is this one - a 18' Hobiecat, with all the rigging and a trailer for $500 seemed reasonable at the time. Of course, I was throwing darts and had about 3 pitchers of beer in me by then. I'll have to see if my truck is equipped to tow the thing. Around here there's little to do without a watercraft - the only worthwhile feature in our landscape is a 65 mile long lake. A cat probably isn't best vehicle for exploring it, but it's a start. And, if all else fails, I can probably get $500 for the trailer alone...

Wrong John, at least in Australia it is millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), metres (m) and kilometres (km). I think it is very much the same thing as colour, favourite etc. I was just surprised to see millimetres being used as I have seen thousandths of an inch used in engineering diagrams that came from the US.
