I just received an invite for the Live Mail. I must say I'm really impressed with the interface -- which looks very much like Outlook Web Access. It also uses asycn updates (ajax). The interface is more sophisticated looking than (cough-cough Gmail, Yahoo mail -- I do have both accounts and so my comparison is fair). I tried it on using both LAN and 56kbps and did not notice a significant delay. The ads are not (yet) context based. But they do waste screenspace on both top and right side of the screen with ads. They've also bumped up the storage space to 2 GB. I heard rumors that they may start charging anual subcriptions for these services. I wouldn't mind the $20/year to continue using something I've used for free for the past 5-6 years. - Malhar

I simply accepted their invitation by clicking the link, and now everytime I open Hotmail, it redirects me to the newer interface. - Malhar
OK. Got in now. My mistake was clicking on the link from inside Outlook Express instead of from IE, which took me round in circles. Kevin

That's why I also got interested. Specifically, I wanted to see how the live spell checker worked. From what I have seen Yahoo mail beta currently works both in FireFox and IE, live mail works only in IE.

I too have all three accounts. I gather that both Google and Yahoo have similar Ajax versions in development. Kevin

Google's is already ajax and kicked this all off. It also isn't aiming to simply be a web based mimic of desktop email clients. So don't expect to see a GMail that works or looks like Live Mail or the Yahoo! Mail beta. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Colib and ilikecameras. Google's is already ajax and kicked this all off. It also isn't aiming to simply be a web based mimic of desktop email clients. GMail kicked off the AJAX movement. GMail did it when AJAX had not been coined yet and was simply known to a few as XmlHttpRequest. Everything about the GMail interface is AJAX. I think it is because GMail is not a desktop-email-client clone that people think it is inferior to Live Mail and co. GMail specifically set out not to copy traditional email interfaces and find new ways of managing email. You can thank GMail for all the AJAX* interest. GMail kicked off the AJAX movement. GMail did it when AJAX had not been coined yet and was simply known to a few as XmlHttpRequest. Everything about the GMail interface is AJAX. I think it is because GMail is not a desktop-email-client clone that people think it is inferior to Live Mail and co. Well, I understand that stuff like Google Maps is Ajax but GMail doesn't seem that "dynamic," e.g., no drag and drop (or is there?). That's why I thought it wasn't Ajax. I don't consider it inferior to Live Mail, just different. Kevin

Yeah, Ajax isn't just about cool UI tricks. Drag and drop etc. is all just good old DHTML at work. Where Ajax comes in is the use of the XmlHttpRequest object to communicate between the interface and the server without refreshing the entire page.
