After many hard tractation MS said, okay, here you go, you've got the source code: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060126/ap_on_hi_te/eu_microsoft;_ylt=AtQSP4_yOXf0y93aWbTIMr.s0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA3cjE0b2MwBHNlYwM3Mzg-[^] And the European commission & some 'open source' advocate say it's not good, the poor competitors won't be able to decipher the complex source code, MS should do more... The same kind of people who force MS to make available the "Windows E(urope)" version. Same price, much less feature, no customer. I think a right description of them would be: "a stupid bunch of bureaucratic wankers".

That Windows E was indeed a stupid decisions, one that many people shake their heads at. If people couldn't figure out how to install a different media player before (or knew somebody who could), then how'd they know it if they bought Windows E. Also - I don't even think Windows E is selling much - if at all - in Denmark. Can't speak for rest of europe. Stupid decisions. As for the source code, that I don't really agree with either. Microsoft developed all but monopoly for a reason. They might have made some unetical calls along the way (show me a company which hasn't) and that should be confronted if they could, but Windows have made it easier to be a computer user, and I strongly doubt computers would have been so widespread had it not been for the defacto standard of Windows(ish) user interface. --------------------------- 127.0.0.1 - Sweet 127.0.0.1 -- modified at 4:03 Friday 27th January, 2006

The licence terms will remain the same: that licensees will not be permitted to disclose the information. This means that it still won't be possible to incorporate it in open source projects. Microsoft's competitors don't 'do' closed-source software any more. They simply contribute to open source projects such as Samba. I can fully understand why Microsoft aren't permitting disclosure - to do so means that there would be a competing source for the information, so Microsoft would be unable to charge for it. The EU Competition Commission cannot mandate that Microsoft makes it available for free, though, because that would be tantamount to theft and would not survive a trip through the courts. So the EU Competition Commission imposes a huge fine on Microsoft for not complying with a requirement that it's impossible to comply with, due to the business model of Microsoft's competitors. I wouldn't worry about the 'N' versions, no-one bought them. I'd imagine though that some people had to be distracted from Windows Vista in order to produce them. I'm not sure that the ruling requires Microsoft to make 'N' versions of Windows Vista. Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder

Right! This is Europe today. Bureaucratic and socialistic mess. If it'll go this way after ten years we will need permission from Brussel if we'll want to go to the toilet. :wtf: "Europe will never be like America. Europe is a product of history. America is a product of philosophy." -Margaret Thatcher

I once had a sticker on my bathroom door with a stick figure with his hands near his, umm... with words underneath:
DON'T KNOCK!
I don't care if your bladder bursts.Cheers, Vikram.

And after all their reviews and consultations it'll be to late because you've gone and wet yourself. At which point you'll be presented with a fine:-D

Heck, there are parts of the source code that MS probbaly can't decipher :omg: People that start writing code immediately are programmers (or hackers), people that ask questions first are Software Engineers - Graham Shanks
