The time has come to roll my 401k to an IRA due to job loss. I am looking for a good online broker (which means Ameritrade is out--didn't like them much.) Any really good or bad experiences? Anyone who thinks he has a better idea of what's good for people than people do is a swine. - P.J. O'Rourke

I've got to agree with Chris. I liked eTrade enough that I've moved my regular banking accounts there as well. Plus with the way US banks are with fees and hours, having local branches nearby doesn't make anything easier or cheaper. It's just one less detail to worry about the next time I move.

oddly, i just found out today that the company i work for sold the business unit i'm part of. so i'm in the position to do a little rolling-over, too. a few years ago i put a previous 401k into a rollover IRA in my eTrade account, and i think this latest one will join it there. i've never had any problems with eTrade... Any idea what this means for your immediate employment? :~ Better to live one day as a lion than a hundred years as a sheep.

the official word is that the purchaser bought everything: all products, client contacts, assets, personnel, etc., and that we're all going to work together now - maintaining two very similar product lines (their's and our's) which have been competing directly against each other for many years - and it'll all be great. i'm, umm, skeptical. Is there a tax hit when you put 401K money into an personal online account? "You get that which you tolerate"

If I put in a regular trading account there would be, but they have regular IRA accounts with the same restrictions and tax benefits. My wife manages all the day to day finances and she can just log into one place and see information for all our accounts. We made the switch when we were buying our first house and we needed $1,500 to cover some of the closing costs to get the house by the end of the year. We couldn't get it out of our Bank quickly because the closest branch was several states away. We were able to write a check for half of it and withdraw the rest in cash, but it was a pain. With an internet bank we could have just wired the money to the mortgage company.

Thanks. I switched jobs three years ago and put my 401k money into a local IRA account with a decent interest rate. But when it matures I have seriously thought about taking the tax hit on part of it and investing it - if you're allowed to do that. "You get that which you tolerate"

I haven't done much with it other then just rolling it into mutual funds. But I think you can also use it for investing directly in stock without losing the IRA status. You just have the age restrictions for withdral penalties. I think there is also a minimum transaction size, but I haven't looked at it in a couple of years.

I've used American Express Financial (now known as Ameriprise). The financial advisor I had was very knowledgeable and accomodating. "If only one person knows the truth, it is still the truth." - Mahatma Gandhi Web - Blog - RSS - Math

Not that I want to trivialise your situation, but there were a few Dilberts along those lines - 19th & 20th January. FWIW, I was made redundant in 1991 - fortunately I did not have any debts at that stage, so I took an 11-month Europe / Middle East tour. I really enjoyed it!

I've been very satisfied with Scottrade.com[^] for several years. I'm not much of a trader, but I like to do my own homework and they provide some excellent tools for online research. The cost of doing trades with them is unbeatable, and even parking cash with them pays better than my local bank. "...a photo album is like Life, but flat and stuck to pages." - Shog9
