Please recommend a good ftp server

Hi, I've just been on the phone with a customer who had some strange problems uploading a lot (1500+) files to his website. I was wandering through the ftp server (Serv-U Ftp server) log window etc. and couldn't find anything suspicious - so I guess his DSL connectoin or ftp client (LeapFTP) is buggy. Then I thought - are we using the best ftp server for our needs ? And where do one turn to when it comes to advice on software.. CP. So here goes: * We need account management via ODBC - the server must store user data in our ODBC connected MySQL database. * We need storage information (how much disk space is each user using) in that very same database - so that the ftp server can block further upload when a limit set by us in the database is reached. Note that this isn't just regular quota management, as we want to take into account the disk usage on the mailserver and db-server as well. Serv-U can't really do that automatically, but I'll figure that out somehow. * Must run on Windows 2003 server We don't mind paying for it - but searching on google mostly gives results on homebrewed, simple, possibly free small ftp servers that can run on anything. We want an "enterprise level" ftp server that just works. Without any problems. We believe that serv-u is one of the better choices available - and at the time when we bought it, it was one of the only ones supporting ODBC account management. Do you have any good/bad experiences with serv-u ftp server ? Is there a more professional ftp server out there ? is it good ? I can't find any documentation / screenshots of the server - which btw is not yet in version 1.0, and the latest release was a seciruty hotfix more than 6 months ago. we use it at work to upload our clients deliveries, and i never heard of real issues with it...

Thanks, Anders. We used g6 earlier, but it didn't support ODBC storage. Furthermore, it was bought (or something) by Bulletproof to become "bulletproof ftp server" (http://www.bpftpserver.com/[^]). Now they seem to co-exist, and g6 is even being developed I see. I don't think I'll go back, though. It was by far inferior compared to Serv-U ftp server. :) Do you know why it's important to make fast decisions? I use Filezilla Server and Client with excellent results. It also supports SFTP if you need that. The SourceForge page is here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla/[^]

Thanks for the link - but Filezilla doesn't fit the bill. I can't administer users in a seperate database, and there is no quota management. :( Do you know why it's important to make fast decisions? Ipswitch FTP is great for complete FTP management, however as every FTP server I deploy, make sure you change the port from 21 to anything you want? or make some rules in the firewall, otherwise there are too many people trying to get into your FTP! http://www.ipswitch.com/products/ws_ftp-server/index.asp[^] Hope that helps Al

Thank you. Didn't think of ipswitch, although I've use their ftp client a long time ago. I don't see anything mention ODBC database connnection support for storage an maintenance of user data, so I suspect it isn't supported. And they want to know just about everything about me except my shoesize before I can download the 30 day trial. ARgh. X| But thanks for the link ! heh... thanks. :) We already have Serv-U Corporate - as this is the only one with ODBC support. Looks like Serv-U _is_ the best solution. Other suggestions seem to be rather "inferior" to Serv-U, at least feature-wise. It surprises me. Do you know why it's important to make fast decisions? I don't know if it'll work for you, but you might want to look at Xitami[^]. They also have Xitami Pro[^] available. Since it's open source, it wouldn't take much to change smftpc.c to perform ODBC-based authentication.
