Ever had your bags lost? CNN says 9700 bags get lost by US airlines per day CNN Story[^] Why dont they just stick RFID tags on bags and put RFID readers on the planes. Their software can keep track of which bags are on each plane and alert the baggage handlers of missing bags before the plane even takes off. its a simple technology problem 60% of statistics are made up on the spot

maybe because the technology is so (relatively) new... and unproven. Bloody hell even I've just gotten used to the acronym RFID, imagine what the big stiffs in management must be like!

Really? I thought they've been using RFID for ages. I remember 10 years ago the marketing guy showing me how an RFID tag was hidden in the wrapping of something he bought. Maybe that was just a simple anti-theft device rather than an ID tag. But I thought RFID has been used in inventory management. I was just reading an article about advances in plastic RFID tags (no silicon), which would be much cheaper to produce. They have working versions in the lab, but they're very limited in range and not "printable" yet, like silicon. Marc Pensieve

If all bags had to pass a checkpoint [a conveyor belt on their way to the tarmac] to insure they were RFID tagged and that the bag actually belonged to someone on the plane there would be a positive security implication also. The problem is not the planes, but the big hubs. My sis works a the lost luggage desk at the local airport. She has stories to tell :) I'm always amazed when my luggae arrives. PUBLIC SERVICE ENCOUNTER Oh, and folks: if you lost your luggage, be nice to the lady at the lost luggage counter. She's a person to, you know. And certanly she didn't drop your luggage. Nor did she put your car-keys in your lost bag, or your only pair of underwear. ( some people :rolleyes: ) THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION

You should put your Garman GPS unit in it one time and set the waypoint tracking option to on. Jesus, and those are just US airlines. Thankfully I have never had any trouble. I seem to have a travelling guardian angle as everything just goes right. My bag is often first out on the conveyor belt even. Hell, I had no space in my carry-on last week and so put a set of four Waterford Crystal glasses into my main luggage.
