I distincly remember a Piers Anthony book in which a minotaur has been genetically engineered, and it is apologetic to the girl tied to the front of his maze, that as she is a virgin he cannot help but kill her at dawn. At this point I realised apart from a couple of good practicioners, most sci-fi/fantasy was just soft porn without the plastic wrapper.
