The Welsh anthem as sung by a Welsh choir (and the whole stadium) at the Rugby World Cup 1999 in Wales was the pinnacle of anthems. I also like our South African national anthem. It has five languages in it with the Afrikaner Die Stem sitting next to Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika. Bloody amazing. It refers to the battle of Bannockburn on June 23/4 1314 when the Scots defeated the English and Scotland subsequently gained independence. And although in the last verse it does say "Those days are past now, And in the past they must remain" and then go on to saying that Scotland can become independent again I feel that most people kind of ignore that bit and use the whole song as a rallying call in a rascist way. My prefererance would be Scotland will Flourish:

The strength of her will, and the force of her mind
Forget the old battles, those days are over
Hatred corrupts, and friendship refines

Let the Scots be a nation, o' proud of their heritage

The U.S. anthem is probably the most violent anthem on earth if you go by the lyrics. I do know what you mean about the Russian one. The anthems I'm sick of hearing are the German and Italian from watching Michael Schumacher winning incessantly in formual 1. But an anthem is so much better when it's after a great acheivement like the Canadian woman's hockey team winning gold. That's when an anthem comes into it's own.

I like the French anthem a lot, even though I can barely understand its lyrics. Has anyone heard the Mexican anthem? I've heard it's internationally recgonized as one of the best.
