I can hum the Soviet national anthem (not sure if it's the same one used by Russia now) because of all the times I heard Nikolai Volkoff sing it before his wrestling matches. --Mike-- Visual C++ MVP  LINKS~! Ericahist | NEW!! PimpFish | CP SearchBar v3.0 | C++ Forum FAQ

So I've been watching the Olympics in all or part every every evening. I really enjoy the spirit of it. Sure, we're all human so there's always gonna be some things that happen we're not all happy with. Nothing and no one is perfect, but I digress... One of smaller things I enjoy (as a lover of music) is hearing the National Anthems. As an American I love my National Anthem, but I gotta say, the Russians have the best National Anthem... ever. It really is awesome, particularly if you throw in choral accompaniment. ... and that's my "lounge completely non-programming related" topic of the day. Thank you very much.

The Welsh anthem as sung by a Welsh choir (and the whole stadium) at the Rugby World Cup 1999 in Wales was the pinnacle of anthems. I also like our South African national anthem. It has five languages in it with the Afrikaner Die Stem sitting next to Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika. Bloody amazing. Imagine the Irish national anthem including bits of God Save the Queen in it and you will have an idea. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry! I can't say I like God Save the Queen

              Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid Victory bring.
              May he sedition hush,
              And like a torrent rush,
              Rebellious Scots to crush.

And in my youth I belted out Flower of Scotland at the top of my lungs at Murrayfield.

              O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see your like again
              That fought and died for
Your wee bit hill and glen.
              And stood against him,
              Proud Edward's army,
              And sent him homeward
              Tae think again.

              The hills are bare now,
And autumn leaves lie thick and still
O'er land that is lost now,
              Which those so dearly held
              That stood against him,
              Proud Edward's army
              And sent him homeward
              Tae think again.

              Those days are past now
And in the past they must remain
But we can still rise now
              And be the nation again!
              That stood against him
              Proud Edward's army
              And sent him homeward
              Tae think again.

It refers to the battle of Bannockburn on June 23/4 1314 when the Scots defeated the English and Scotland subsequently gained independence. And although in the last verse it does say "Those days are past now, And in the past they must remain" and then go on to saying that Scotland can become independent again I feel that most people kind of ignore that bit and use the whole song as a rallying call in a rascist way. My prefererance would be Scotland will Flourish:

Scotland will flourish, by the sweat of our labour
The strength of her will, and the force of her mind
Forget the old battles, those days are over
              Hatred corrupts, and friendship refines

Let the Scots be a nation, o' proud of their heritage
With an eye to the future, and a heart to forgive
And let us be rid, of those bigots and fools
Who will not let Scotland, live and let live

Let us govern our country, wisely and fairly
Let each man and woman, work wi a will
And Scotand will flourish, secure in the knowledge
That we reap our own harvest, and ring our own till

And let us be known, for our kind hospitality
A hand that is open, lay proffered to friends
A hard working people, proud and unbending
Scotland will thrive, and win out in the end

Scotland will flourish, by the sweat of our labour
The strength of her will, and the force of her mind
Forget the old battles, those days are over
              Hatred corrupts, and friendship refines

So let us be known, for our kind hospitality
A hand that is open, lay proffered to friends
A hard working people, proud and unbending
Scotland will thrive, and win out in the end

              A much better song t

The U.S. anthem is probably the most violent anthem on earth if you go by the lyrics. I do know what you mean about the Russian one. The anthems I'm sick of hearing are the German and Italian from watching Michael Schumacher winning incessantly in formual 1. But an anthem is so much better when it's after a great acheivement like the Canadian woman's hockey team winning gold. That's when an anthem comes into it's own.

The night that they broadcasted the medal ceremonies where the Italian men received their gold medals in the 15km speed skate pursuit was so moving. The guys up on the podium with hands over their hearts, just belting out the anthem accompanied by several thousand spectators is what the games are all about. It was great to see and hear. :) Chris Meech I am Canadian. [heard in a local bar] When I want privacy, I'll close the bathroom door. I like the French anthem a lot, even though I can barely understand its lyrics. Has anyone heard the Mexican anthem? I've heard it's internationally recgonized as one of the best. You can here it in MP3 here[^] (it's an official government page -- number 3 is partial and number 6 is complete). I'm just amazed at Wikipedia, the Mexican anthem has its own article[^] :-> -- LuisR

That's why you record it then fast forward through the anthems. (I skip all the way from race end to the press conference.) Anyone who thinks he has a better idea of what's good for people than people do is a swine. - P.J. O'Rourke
