Wow. Where are these pictures from? Canada? USA? (somewhere that speaks English judging by some signs in the background).

This is probably a stupid question but is that much ice damaging to your car? I've never had even frost on my car so I haven't a clue. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry! K(arl) wrote: oh, and BTW, CHRISTIAN ISN'T A PARADOX, HE IS A TASMANIAN!

i wouldnt have thought it would do too much damage to the body work. if you stay in ireland, you should see a decent frost some time, unless you are very close to the coast Nunc est bibendum

Waterford is pretty much on the coast but we get good frosts here. I don't have my own car here though. Have one back in S.A. where frost, ice, snow etc. is not a problem. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry! K(arl) wrote: oh, and BTW, CHRISTIAN ISN'T A PARADOX, HE IS A TASMANIAN!

Now, mind you that while I have had vehicles iced before, I have never had it that bad (maybe 1/4"-1/2" of icing, tops).  But I think that you need to be more worried about liquids inside your vehicle freezing (like your coolant) or becoming far too thick/less-viscous or sludgy (like motor or gear/crankcase oil).    Just do not throw hot water on your window to try to get the ice off! :)    Peace! -=- James

Actually, my neighbor used to do just that when the ice was over an inch thick. The water would melt most of the ice, but not all of it and the windows would be safe. "If only one person knows the truth, it is still the truth." - Mahatma Gandhi Web - Blog - RSS - Math

I see a ford mondeo (also in the US) and perhaps an MGF behind the car infront of the van. However, the pointy church steeple in the background does look more swiss than US, and the benches are the same, so you could be right. Nunc est bibendum

This might be a tad more effective than de-icer, although a little harder on the paint.

Switzerland. Vevey to be precise. Between Lausanne and Montreux on Lake Geneva. I was there when this happened. Saw those cars and everything.

It really depends on how you try to get it off... which with this extent cant be tricky. Chipping it off could damage the paint/bodywork. Some chemicals can damage the finish but most de-icers won't. Then again the worst I have had to worry about is a quarter inch of ice. Matt Newman

If you know an ice storm;s coming, you should cover your car completely with a plastic tarp big enough that it touches the ground on all sides. In light storms you can just lift and break the ice off, in worse conditions you've got something protecting the paint against more agressive efforts. Or you could just melt around hte car nad have a helper or 3 lift the iced tarp strait off and set it aside.
