Copying DVDs

I use DVDShrink[^]. However, they've been badgered out of actually linking to their own software, so good luck finding it...

Exactly. DVDShrink is all you need. It's free & no BS. Just set it up to outpout an ISO and burn with Nero,etc etc.
Found on Bash.org [erno] hm. I've lost a machine.. literally _lost_. it responds to ping, it works completely, I just can't figure out where in my apartment it is.

Right then - firstly a disclaimer.....I am NOT interested in pirating DVDs, WareZ or any of that other bulls$%£t, I've never downloaded ANYTHING illegally and all my CDs, DVDs and software is genuine...phew.... Right then - am a BIG film fan, and have a truck load of DVDs. Unfortunately, they seem to be a little fragile, and don't last very long....so what I need to do is make a working copy of the film I'm into at the moment (tend to watch a couple of times back to back if really good) Have googled naturally, but all I seem to be able to find is crap about ripping DVDs to an IPod (don't have one, don't want one), or dodgy looking downloads.... Can ANYONE offer some advice - am completely in the dark on this one....don't mind paying for something as long as it's pukka, and not riddled with bugs / spyware etc.... DVD Shrink works great - so long as there's no copy protection built in to the disc (which more and more have now). I used to use DVD Shrink to create a recompressed image of the DVD and have it automatically transfer it to DVD Decrypter to burn the new image. The new process is to use DVD Decrypter first to extract an image from DVD and remove the copy protection (which it does very well). Then I use DVD Shrink to produce a newly compressed image which is then automatically transferred back to DVD Decrypter which burns it to DVD. Works very well. I back up all my DVD's - kids are really hard on them. Cheers, Drew.

This is true. I haven't had to use DVD Decrypter much, but i do keep it around for the odd disc that needs it.

You do what with a who now?!?!? So then (and apologies for the ignorance)....DVD encryprer - a download somewhere? As an aside, would be interested in learning about the copy protection mechanisms too- but I'll save that for another day lol! It's been a while since I've been this clueless about a techy subject (though I'm sure if SteveS is around he'll diagree he he!), so thanks for any advice! There is another option - use Nero to write images to your hard drive and use a CD/DVD drive emulator. The tigress is here :-D

Heh - ya, when I re-read my post it sounds like some comedy skit :) So, here it is, step-by-step. I won't provide links because, well, what's legal here ain't legal everywhere - you're on your own to find the following two programs: 1) DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 2) DVD Decrypter 3.5.4 (last free version) Check out this[^] site for more info. (and bad news) about DVD Decrypter. Anyway, here are the steps: 1) Insert your DVD 2) Start DVD Decrypter and set it to write an ISO image 3) Choose your DVD and let 'er rip. 4) Start DVD Shrink and set it to read from an ISO image (rather than a DVD) 5) Pick the ISO created in step 3 6) Once the file has been scanned, turn off all the things you don't want in your backup copy of the DVD (I take out the previews, languages I don't understand, etc.) 7) Let 'er rip again - it will create another ISO, this time small enough to fit a regular 4.7 GB DVD 8) When you do step 7, tell it to use DVD Decrypter to burn an image. Make sure a blank DVD is in your writer. 9) That's it - the newly burned disk will pop out when it's finished (and it will play a nice song for you). Careful not to hop into your nice big office chair and spin around to your keyboard without realizing the dvd drive has popped it's tray. That cracking sound isn't nice - luckilly I managed to take my drive apart and sort of glue things back where they should be. It still works. Cheers, Drew.

I'd stick with DVD Shrink for the ripping and use Nero for the mounting. You can rip your DVD's to an ISO and then, using Nero's ImageDrive utility, mount them as actual disks from the ISO when you want to watch them. Pretty handy.

Correct. Although you might want to look at something other than ImageDrive for the mounting solution. I dislike the fact that ImageDrive doesn't have any shell extensions so that I can rightclick on an ISO and mount it from Explorer. And I know that Alcohol Software[^]'s products do have that shell extension functionality.

why not just use Nero Recode? http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/Nero_Recode_2.html[^] although it says non-copywrite protected, combined with DVD-Decrypter it works well. Cool - looking at some large storage solutions - kinda getting into this idea he he. Seems like max storage is at about 4*500GB SATA / IDE in something like this[^] Can envisage all sorts of PROPER media fun with something like that....so come on then - ultimate media stup anyone? Try www.slysoft.com[^] and look at AnyDVD and CloneDVD. I've used DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter and the Slysoft stuff is better and more straightfoward. As mentioned in an earlier thread DVD Decrypter is no longer being developed and will not touch anything new. Better to live one day as a lion than a hundred years as a sheep.

AnyDVD is free for a trial period and really works well, some of the newer stuff out there won't decrypt successfully with just DVD Decrypter (ie. Bewitched w/ Wil Ferrell & Nicole Kidman). If you have problems with decrypting a particular DVD check out Doom9's Decrypting Forum[^].
